Bathroom floor help

We have just moved into a new 1930's style house and I have inherited a good quality but slightly dated bathroom & separate toilet (with carpet). I am really struggling to find a flooring option that complements the tiles and modernises the room. Any ideas welcomed?

A dark wood effect would look very smart...

Hi Joanna,

We have both wood effect and stone effect luxury vinyl tiles.

Vinyl works well in a bathroom as it's easy to clean, hygenic and warm to the touch. Our flooring also is compatible with underfloor heating.

In terms of the colour, we agree with Louisa that dark wood effect would look great, such as Blackjack Oak 22862:

Ceramic or porcelain tile will do very well. Laminate can "puff and die" inside of 6 months! I've seen it. It isn't pretty. The closest you will get to "click together" flooring = 100% vinyl flooring. The vinyl is water proof...the joint is not. There is still a chance that moisture (water or humidity) will reach the subfloor and begin to rot it out from underneath the floor. Be safe = ceramic or porcelain tile properly installed. I think you can work with a cooler tone in the bathroom. One of the design benefits with bathrooms is they can have their own "presence" in a home. They do not need to be identical to the rest of the home. They can carry the theme...but they are allowed their own flare. Go with something that is visually interesting. It can be a breath of fresh air if the rest of the home "all one look".

Assuming that is your washstand the tile is against I would tile the floor with the same tile to avoid you having too many different flat surfaces in a small space (assuming you can get it in a floor quality tile). Given the light situation I would paint a feature wall in a deep colour to add contrast to an otherwise fairly white room. Against this tile I like Farrow and a ball Downpipe- don't forget to buy a wipeable matt finish.

I would go for a waterproof laminate, something like Karndean which is available in many different colours

I'd go for the luxury vinyl flooring, if you pop down to b and Q they have very good samples. alternatively the amtico or karndean flooring which comes at slightly higher prices may be worth taking a look at, especially if you are Considering a long term investment.

Thank you for the suggestions I had not considered a dark wood effect but can see how that would work. I will take a look at samples tomorrow

Those pictures are really useful for me to visualise it so thank you. I think the contrast of colours work so well and it had not crossed my mind to use dark wood.

I would strongly recommend Kandean's Palioclic.
