Kitchen ceiling light ideas

We have just taken down our dividing wall between our kitchen and dinning room,

we currently have the ceiling down so need to think about what ceiling lights we would like.. I like the recessed lights but our kitchen is at the back of the house and don't want it to be dark. Also our ceiling joists do not have equal gaps between them so would have different distance gaps between them if wanting them to run in parallel lines and I'm concerned it would look odd.. so need to think of an alternative, ideas would be greatly appreciated.

hi, would you have any images of the kitchen/diner. it would help give a better indication of the style lights which would match your kitchen

New kitchen is not in yet, need to decide on lights so cables can go in before new ceiling goes back up.

Hi Julia, it's a bit difficult making suggestions from a distance without seeing and 'feeling' the space but you have several options... pendant lights are certainly one, as Pavilion Broadway has suggested. You could have several dotted around the space, even hanging them at different heights - which could be fun. Alternatively you could use LED strip lighting around the room - this gives a very modern look and of course could be used in conjunction with other types of lighting. The attractive vaulted ceiling means you will be looking up at it so you don't want to be blinded by spotlights pointing down and remember you'll occasionally need to change bulbs so whatever you install make sure it is accessible. Depending on how you decorate and furnish the room you could consider a variety of lighting that works from the floor upwards. I think we are too often stuck on the idea that lights have to come down from the ceiling. They don't. Hope that helps but will be happy to discuss further. Best wishes, it looks a super project. Hi Coco, yes sure I understand now! Do you have lighting in the cooker hood? If so this will help a great deal. If not and it's too late to add then now, just make sure you have ceiling lights that give good general light, by that I mean not a directional spot as you will always be cooking in your own shadow. I think this may have been something that annoyed so much before? Recessed or spotlights above the cooking area are good, but if your cooker hood has built in lights you should be fine. Here's a few glass lights which are easy to clean (important in a kitchen) and they let plenty of light shine out in all directions. This is what I mean by a general light. Finally you mentioned it's a north facing room. My top tip here is use LED light bulbs as they are much cheaper to run, last years, meaning you won't have to get a high step ladder to change light bulbs. Do you know the number one reason for dark rooms is people just don't replace light bulbs when they blow! Me included! I've now swapped to LED and my kitchen is bright all the time now. It's quite a small space so I would suggest that the pendants are no larger than 200mm diameter. Ensure downlights are centered over worktops and a good rule of thumb for a kitchen with standard ceiling heights is 1.5m's apart. Linear LED tape for under cupboard lighting - around 12watts/m will provide ample light and this could be complimented with the same lighting on top of the units. I would recommend LED lights beneath cabinets to help lighten the kitchen working space and have spot lights in the kitchen area and feature light in the part opposite to the kitchen space. if you are worried about recessed spot lights seeming out of place, etc I'd go for LED spotlights with a single ceiling plate.

For a good distribution of light, while avoiding recessed due to the lack of equality in your beams, I would consider modern surface downlights like these Dau LED or the more budget version Dau GU10. For extra light which is also a nice effect, is to add linear led on top of the units on its own circuit so that you have the option to turn that on to create that entertaining mood.
