Comments (53)Well the walls have been repainted at last. And the winner was....................... F&B Cromarty! Second was Mizzle, but it looked a little too dark in my north facing room, but it was a close contender. Thank you all for your brilliant advice. Comments (3)Hi Emily, I do see your dilemma and you are right to be cautious. I see this situation with clients all the time. FEES I have been designing for 30 years and still find it difficult to discuss fees so I tend to get it out of the way as soon as possible. I don't charge for the first visit, its for me to see and understand the job and for the client to meet me and see if they like my ideas. (Never underestimate your gut feelings when you meet an architect/designer, the working relationship is crucial.) I put in a fixed fee in writing immediately after the meeting, if the client sees value in my fee I get the job, if they don't they have had the benefit of my advice and they can keep looking for the right person. This is the nature of the business. ARCHITECT OR INTERIOR DESIGNER This is more difficult than it sounds. Ideally you need an interior architect, ie someone that understands interiors and has the knowledge to design the building around an agreed interior theme allowing for layout, lighting and aesthetic. (or an architectural practice that has an in-house interior designer) Always ask to see their portfolio to ensure their work is to the standard you expect and that their style is suitable for your taste. If they can't show you this don't use them. Always ask if they can illustrate their ideas, sounds obvious but its important. Any extension or building alteration is a big investment for the client and as such the client should be in a position where they can see and understand exactly what is being suggested. Plans and elevations are great for technical solutions but this should be backed up with a 3D model so you can see the extension in relation to the house and also see the interior space with furniture so you can understand the layout, style and light quality. SUMMARY Employ someone you like and have confidence in. See samples of their work. Agree a fee you're comfortable with from day one. Hope that helps. 9 years agoIn the first three inspiration pics that you say you like, note that all three floors are very simple, almost no pattern, strong colors but lack of color. That being said if you have busy floor then a much simpler counter top; simple floor then a busy counter top. But not both. I suggest you choose something very simple and sleek for the counter tops. It will give your eyes a place to rest in this really lovely kitchen.
One design element should be the star in a room and everything else supports that star element but in quieter ways.....

You have your own unique vision, and you may break all the rules, but it is YOUR vision. The one thing I think is going to be vitally important is lighting. Here are a couple of "dark kitchens" but notice the extensive lighting. Very important.
Dark counters, medium dark floors/black and grays, but loads of lighting. Also white ceiling and walls. So you do have to have some "eye" rest places and that might be your backsplash and appliances, which would move me toward stainless. It is somewhat reflective, would repeat your grays and give some relief from the dark shades as well as cooperate with countertops. Black would just be another color, which I think you should avoid. Do you see what I mean?
A Modern Rustic Kitchen · More InfoDark cabinets, somewhat lighter flooring and gray countertops, but a lot of natural light. Light is everything in dramatic spaces. You must have undercabinet lighting so get that wiring installed asap. Very important. Perhaps even some on top of cabinets or cove molding.

9 years agoCandice, I used the Petrified wood a couple years ago. I got the high gloss smooth finished but suggest you try the honed instead for a more active family. We had tile that looked like slate and added a glass backsplash. I worked very hard with the contractor and installer to be sure where the mitering was done and what was placed where. I did not leave it up to them to decide.
It was not for everyone's taste but we sure had compliments in person. Once we added stainless appliances, the kitchen came alive!
