Upper Storey Side Extension - Semi-Detached Property

I want to get a side extension done on my upper floor, but I have just realised that it will limit the light to my living room window. Is there any way that I can come around this? I have attached a basic sort of outline of what my downstairs is looking like at the moment (according to our extension plan so far). Is there anything I can do to stop the upstairs extension affecting the amount of light I receive in my living room? Would it help to change the layout of the rooms downstairs?

Either make the extension smaller so that you still have room for a small window on the side, plus put glass doors in to the kitchen from that room. . Or knock through and make the living 2 in to a large kitchen diner, then you can have the extension whatever size you like.
Personally i think knocking through is the only sensible solution.

Yes, making a large kitchen diner was one of the ideas we had. We wanted to put a large patio door in the kitchen area so the light reaches the whole room.

Thank you for the replies. I have taken inspiration from a house nearby and really like the idea of a rear extension that opens up the back bedroom into a mezzanine area (which then becomes a home office / gym / laundry room. This requires the side extension to be of a higher height (~1.5 stories high) with a glass roof slanted towards the top of the mezzanine level. Given the back of our property is set down at a lower ground level than the neighbouring property by ~ 1.5 metres they will not be overlooked anymore than a regular 1 story side return. Do you think Lambeth will give planning for this kind of extension? bearing in mind we want to go back by 3m with a regular rear extension too. So it will essentially be a rear extension and side return (rather than a wraparound). That looks like a lovely spacious house, big windows etc! I know what you mean about pebble dash but it looks like it's in good condition and I agree that it would look a bit odd if you paint it, unless any other houses in the street have already done it. Extensions are usually built in a modern style which complements rather than matches the original house. In terms of the materials used, there may be a style that's developed locally for modern buildings, so it's a good idea to have a look around, even having a look at your council planning website as that will give you a good feel for what is being passed by the planners. Eg we're having an extension built at the moment on our 1930s house which will be a mix of wood cladding and cotswold stone - we're in the cotswolds so this works with the local vernacular and other modern buildings around here.
