Suggestions for hall radiator please

Hi all

Does anyone have a suggestion for a hall radiator which would look good on the available open wall space please? We've just changed the front door and added a porch so it isn't as cold as it used to be in the hall (the long wall backs on to an integral garage). The new coat and shoe rack covers the existing radiator - current radiator dimensions are 70cm x 60cm x 6cm. The décor will be changed in March and those pictures are coming down!

Perhaps looking at something like the new Flow range from heating specialists Milano http://www.bestheating.com/milano-aruba-white-middle-connection-designer-radiator-635-x-1000mm.html would be a good option.

The position of your current radiator in the hallway could mean that a middle connection rad like the Flow would be easier to install, as you wouldn't need to move pipework as much, or damage that lovely flooring.

If you are thinking of replacing the convector and leaving the radiator in the same place, then this style is also available with standard valve inlets too.

Go for a standard rad and make a statement rad cover. If its 20cm deep you can make a feature with a mirror and have a useful shelf for incoming and outgoing post and keys etc.

Goodie on the lamps! Don't get me wrong, I love a mirrored table, I just don't think it is doing all it can in that spot. They are great in a bedroom and also in a dark corner in a living room. I'm sure you can find the perfect place to show it off. I don't usually like radiator covers either, but sometimes, and in the right material, they can work well. Go with a shelf mounted above it if you are unsure, but because your front door (more on that later) has those wonderful vertical lines in it, you could have a radiator cover with the same long slats. I think your door is great - it has strong but simple features, that I thought fit with your clean line aesthetic, while letting in light. I may be against the grain here, but unless your house is incredibly drafty and it is a 16th Century cottage or a French chateau, I wouldn't dream of having a curtain across a door. Call me crazy, but our last house was a wonky Victorian with a beautiful, enormous front door with stained glass in it and around it and the wind used to come in so strong around the edges that I felt like I was in the Arctic Circle, but there wasn't a chance I was going to cover up such a beautiful piece of architecture. Yeah, that is a bit crazy.... You could paint it in a cream to match the rest of the house, but make the other changes to the entrance hall first, live with it for a while (next year, as you say) and then see if you still want to paint it. I'll go and look for something for the floor now while other people tell you I'm wrong on the door curtain idea!

Hi everyone, Just wondered if you could offer some advice? My partner and I are in the process of renovating our house. It has been a massive project and we have done everything ourselves, including building an extension, to give us a large open plan kitchen, dining, living space; which is (finally!) on the verge of being completed. Now that we are getting close to finishing the inside, it means I have finally been able to think about pretty things, such as paint and accessories. Which brings me onto my topic point - I am in the process of painting the hallway in F&B Elephants Breath. As you can see on the photographs, the radiator wall is the wall I have put the first coat on today, and I will be finishing the stairs and landing over coming days. We intend to replace the boards underneath the hand rail with spindles... So what F&B colour should I paint them? I will be painting the doors and also having a radiator cover... Should I paint all woodwork in the same colour as the bannister? Just to give you an idea, we have wood floor for hallway leading into the extension. Secondly, I have attached a photograph of the idea I had for carpet on the stairs and landing which I adore... However, this house is a project that we intend to sell within a year or so of finishing so in order to capitalise on profit, the carpet is over budget (£70 odd per sq yard) I need to half that at least (appreciate won't be 80:20 like the attached picture)... Can anyone offer any suggestions please as to a carpet that will look good with colour scheme? Can't be too countrified as won't fit the age of house (unfortunately). Sisal is lovely, but I think you need to think about how to clean going forward. I'd stick to a good quality carpet for the stairs and your LVT for the Hallway. Re the LVT.......going for something with a pattern or textured look will hide the dirt. We have Karndean Van Gogh. During the day we all troll in and out constantly including the two dogs and it's great. You could go for a pattern:- Harvey Maria - Hardwicke range There are several shades here that go with your F&B Pigeon:- I like the Pear Tree Green. You could then follow with a dark grey carpet to pick up on the line around the pattern in the same colour. Or Amtico Decor also has some life and will look good in a Victorian Hallway. Lastly, do get rid of the black plastic framed pictures and red shelf...................... replace with a 'large as you can get' ornate mirror to bounce around some light from the front door, over the top of a narrow console table.

Hiya, we have a Victorian hallway and it is done very similar to Rukmini’s first image. We have a greeny grey under the dado (including the skirting and dado itself) and on the doors and architraves. It’s Blanket by Paint & Paper library which is a little darker than Rukmini’s pic. Then an off white above the dado and on the ceiling. It used to be off white all over and the grey definitely has made it darker. On the other hand it also feels smarter and shows the marks less! Swings and roundabouts. I wouldn’t have three colours, I would pick one colour plus off white above the dado/picture rail (Pointing seems sensible!!) Your tiles look browny grey so would suggest looking at Ammonite by F&B and its family of colours - (Cornforth White, Purbeck Stone). See below for the F&B families of greys. If you want bluey or greeny greys then Paint & Paper Library are a good source but be careful to see if they will go with your tiles.

The one I now have in my kitchen is similar to the one above. I made sure the output was sufficient as we now have the one radiator instead of 2. It's great and offers more heat than the other 2 did. We love it.

Geyser.co.uk have lots of long, horizontal radiators, both central heating and electric versions, in various colours. I have used the company for all of our new rads - great service and next day delivery on in stock items. What kind of style is the rest of the house in/being done in? I think a traditional radiator would look great based on the photos you've attached.

I agree with the comments about covering whatever you have with a radiator cover - to reduce ugliness and provide a really useful shelf above. However, whether you go down that route or not, the location is a super-important aspect. Mine is in exactly the wrong place - and it was my decision - and I regret it every day. The trouble is that it took a lot of drilling through concrete below original terracotta tiles (I had no idea it would mean that) so if I move it again it means more wrecked floor and how the pipes would work is impossible to imagine. I can't cover it up with a cover as it is in a small corner next to the front door and fits the space exactly, end to end. A cover would stop the door from opening. I had hopeless advice from the plumber installing the radiator; advice I have to live with - bitterly. Mine is in a hall like yours with the radiator opposite yours but facing the hall (my window is half length). I didn't want it where yours is as I thought it would protrude just where people arrive or leave. I reckon yours is in the right place; it just needs to be prettied up a bit.

Hi Tracey,

it seems to me that the coat stand could be replaced with a possibly longer wall mounted arrangement of shelf, niches and hooks, which would give better storage for coats, gloves, has, umbrellas etc. The frame of the current arrangement is really redundant since you are not hanging coats on hangers anyway. The suggested solution could contribute more positively to the hallway and would stick out less into the space at eye level. Thus you would enable you to keep the rad. where it is, perhaps hanging shorter coats over it....

Me again Tracey- just had another look. What about making the rad longer and lower and putting a seat over it where the entrance hall is widest- still sticking to the wall mounted hanging idea. A mirror, or series of smaller mirrors on the rest of the wall adjacent to the stairs would make the space seem wider.

Hi Tracey,

I have a similar hallway and I think the problem here is not the radiator but the position of the coat stand. I would move it on the other side and if possible change the door opening, so that when you open the door you walk to the stairs or hallway. After you've done that you can cover the radiator you have as suggested above and place a mirror above it. I think that will look great!

Hi Tracey,

I am about to embark on a similar update and I am currently looking at designer vertical flat panel radiators which come with a design / picture on them and would provide a 'conversation' piece too. There are many makers and it's all about choice ... and budget as they are more expensive than the normal radiator ... but I think 'worth it'! best wishes whatever you decide.

Hi Tracey. Does the coat stand fit in the porch? If the hall was cold I might just put a wooden shelf over the top, accessorise and add a mirror plus paint the radiator in the wall colour so it blends in. It looks a little close to the bottom of the stairs to move it but that may be the camera angle?

Thanks everyone. I'll have a proper read once I'm home from work.

We have just had a new from door (switched the door and side panel) and added the porch in the last week or so. We've only just bought the coat/shoe rack to replace a basic coat rack so I guess that's staying.

Opposite the coat rack is the lounge and there really isn't room for a radiator cover once we move the radiator further down the hall (we've just removed a cover from there).

I'll definitely have a look at the radiator suggestions later, thank you.

It obviously has to be quite slimline, but luckily there is plenty of choice now and lots of sizes available so should be easy to find a solution you are happy with.

You can go classic with a steel column radiator
