Wasted space

Help needed

We have an upstairs room/landing that we currently don't use. We have no ideas what we want to use it for...

In the past it's been set up as a games room, to lounge and study but it never got used.

It's a good sized room and also acts as a corridor to two bedrooms. Currently we have 2 sofas, an easy chair, a bookcase and a dresser in there. All mismatched!

Does anyone have any idea what we can do with it?

I think trying to turn it into a room, when it is in fact a large landing, is where you're possibly going wrong. You can't put things in the middle of it as it's a thoroughfare. ( with the exception of maybe a table with a vase or such like ), Instead you could choose to celebrate the space you have, maybe a bookcase or two? A small corner sofa bottom left? Linen cupboards? Depends on your style of furnishing.

Large landings are usually used predominantly for statement pieces of furniture and are not intended to be rooms for use. They just celebrate space.

Obviously I don't know the layout of the bedrooms, which one is the master etc. However, given the space available on the left, You could also do a couple of things.

Donate the space just bottom left to one of the bedrooms as an en-suite?

Or if the bedroom off to the left could use the space, then you could claw back half the landing and give it all to that room by moving the entrance. Thus that room would have built in storage ie wardrobes, drawers in the smaller space at the top and an en-suite in within the room bottom left.

This would leave you with what you might deem a better shaped landing.

This is the space roughly drawn.
I've no idea how to arrange furniture. I'm open to buying any new furniture needed to make it look good.

We had a similar area on the side on our previous house. My husband built a sloped roof with guttering and put gates at both ends. As we didn't have a garage it was ideal for his motorbike and additional garden storage, and still allowed access to the garden. If you really wanted to extend it would probably be better to make it part of the rooms it is next to, and have roof lights. I had considered extending our kitchen into the space as it would have made it large enough for it to be U shape rather than L or fit a small table, but the cost outweighed the benefits when it wasn't our forever home.

Hi Louise. I can see your predicament. You could add an addtional 600mm wide unit to the projected counter behind the fridge. If you extend that too far it will compromise the ciruclation as you have a unit on the adjacent wall. You should typically leave at least 1m as best practise. If you wanted a quirky alternative, you could have floor to ceiling cabinets Infront of the door way on the left with a hidden door into that space. Hopefully this helps

I would suggest it isn’t enough for 2 people. Ideally each person should have their own wardrobe, but I know that’s easier said than done. Have you had a declutter of the clothes? If you haven’t worn something for a year, I suggest you give it to charity or try to sell it. My wardrobe was so chockablock that I pulled everything out and sorted it into keep, charity shop or sell. Now I can actually see all my clothes and it is easier to manage. We all keep stuff for far too long, and sometimes it is time to let it go. Looking again, you could add another rail below the one you have, so you’ve twice the capacity, but it needs to be short things like tops at the top and trousers/skirts at the bottom. I would sort all the stuff at the bottom and decide if it is needed.

I agree that it’s lovely and you should keep it. When you do finally decide the suite needs changing you could keep it as a big bathroom but replan it to include your washer and dryer.

I love the ideas to give other rooms storage and ensuites but luckily all rooms have build in wardrobes and enough bathrooms.

I've attached photos so you can see what I've got 'dumped' currently in that space.
I agree I need to just celebrate the extra space and place furniture nicely. But what where??

I think it looks lovely as it is. If anything i'd go for a matching white sofa opposite the existing instead of the grey one and add a separate Green armchair, grey cushion?

Hi. It looks a great space. I would lose the low wooden table and put the grey cabinet there (or you could try the table in front of the white sofa and see what you think). I'm not sure everything opposite the white sofa works as well with the overall look? I would rehouse the grey sofa, footstool and chair (although this works). I don't know If you like them but I think an orange Barcelona chair could work with a lamp behind, perhaps a side table or the matching footstool. I just think a splash of another colour would look great.

I like the idea of a chair and footstool. I love the Herman chair and the Barcelona with footstool. I didn't know they came in orange. Maybe I could do a white one. A standard lamp is a great idea too.

I will get rid of the wood table and the small sofa.

Yes it's difficult to tell exact shades onscreen but it appears to come in a nearly burnt orange which would work (Mind you if you google images it looks like 30 shades of orange which could be possible due to replicas or just the lighting!). Or a white one!

The small sofa and wood table are going this weekend. I'll shop for a nice relaxing chair and lamp.
