Kitchen Worktop

I am looking to replace the kitchen worktop and have seen Neolith (sintered stone) in a local showroom. Has anyone used this material, which it is claimed is pretty much indestructible, and what is your experience of it. I am currently waiting for a quote, so it could be completely out of the running due to price.

Hello,

As you will be aware, sintered materials are primarily used for kitchen worktops.

The huge advantage of this material in the kitchen environment compared to natural stones/ woods; is that the material is tougher and virtually non-porous making it very easy to clean whilst being highly hygienic. Most manufacturers of sintered worktops incorporate an antibacterial compound into the product, ensuring the longevity of the product, and its performance as a trusted surface to prepare meals.

It is a great product, and has been used in professional kitchens, and private homes.

It is a brilliant surface to work with, and maintains its original look overtime.

Ideal for creating a crisp clean look to any scheme.

Hi Jackie, we agree with the above comments. We have a Neolith worktop on display in our showroom at the moment. Its hugely popular, so many clients love the look of concrete and other natural stones that aren't hugely practical. Our current display worktop looks very similar to concrete, but is durable and prctical. Good luck!

Another vote for Dekton and Sileston Quartz worktops, use them all the time in our projects as so much more forgiving and low maintenance than granite or marble. Agree that Corian is a good option if you have a large island to prevent visible joins, whilst it has other benefits you do need to be very careful when it comes to heat. Vast range of colours and textures in all types nowadays so the type of material shouldn't limit the effect you want to achieve - be that traditional or contemporary. I am always a big advocate that a worktop is an investment, there is no point spending a large sum on a beautiful quality kitchen and then finishing it off with a worktop that won't stand up to time as well as the rest of the room or cheapen the look - I always recommend to go for the best you can afford.

Hi Robert, four years on and I’ve still got the wooden worktop! Life got in the way with my husband’s ill health so everything has been put on the back burner for now. However, I did give the worktops a good sand and applied Osmo Top Oil and they do look better. Picture below of one bit of worktop. Sink still needs changing but I’ll get there! I will just say my friend has Corian worktop and upstand and she is very disappointed. It is softer than quartz and has been dented. It also holds onto watermarks and needs wiping down constantly. Marks can be ground out but it needs a professional to do this. I’m not saying don’t have it, but it’s not a cheap option and it’s not that tough. Go to Daisy England’s comments above as she has some great suggestions. She works or worked for a kitchen company and knows her stuff. Good luck! Love your kitchen, you’ve done a great job, not only does the kitchen look good, it’s totally practical, drawers are the way forward, even if they are more expensive than cupboards. I’ve just redone a kitchen in a house we rent out, the old one was finally falling apart. I was going to go to Howdens and use the joiner etc we knew, but in the end we used a small local company, which cost us £300 more, but the quality of their interior cabinets and doors was so outstanding, plus they could do everything, including tiling, we went with them. We didn’t change the floor, but did everything necessary, I’m hoping it lasts well and our tenants look after it!

Quartz if you can afford it. No sealing, no heat sensitivity although I use trivets just a quick wipe and it looks new. I've had white Silestone in three houses. Can't fault it. It always looks clean and bright.
