Help with exterior of house, facade needs more curb appeal!

Hello Houzzers, I really need some help and would greatly appreciate some ideas/inspiration to transform the exterior of my house so it has more curb appeal. Thank you.

Comments (66)Hi All, Here's an update. The hedges have settled in nicely over the last 4 years (has it really been that long already?!) They had a trim at the weekend, not the best time of year to cut Phontinia I know, but they had gotten a little out of control.. I intend to add a gate over the next few months and continue to plant the beds along the house. They currently have hydrangea and French lavender plants (oh and the odd azalea) in them but need more. Also going to plant a border of box around each of the beds the trees on the lawn are in - hence why these look a little scruffy at the mo.. I've considered growing something on the walls, but still not sure what or how. Each summer I add two hanging baskets either side of the front door - which help break it up a little. Still very much a work in progress (aren't they always ;-) ) but I like it. To give you an idea of what a part rendered, part timber clad 1970s house could look like, I've attached a before and after pic of a remodel we recently designed for a client (this was a 2-storey side extension, losing the garage and re-positioning the front entrance and internal layout). Decide upon whether you actually need a major change to your house, or just want something cosmetic to improve the way you feel about it. Re-positioning the front door, updating the windows/garage door and rendering/cladding might be enough? Whatever you decide to do, make it the right choice for your lifestyle needs and the best possible version you can afford. Good luck with whatever option you decide to take. Comments (18)Whilst the black frames of your neighbours looks good, if you don’t want black, I would go for a mid grey on all window frames and doors front and back, including the garage door. This will look good in between your neighbours properties. If budget allows I would recommend replacing the front door as it’s dated as far as kerb appeal goes. Try a contemporary door with some glazing, in the same grey as the windows etc. Then add plenty of colourful pot plants, as others have mentioned, as much greenery as you can fit in. If you can replace the roof at the rear porch area that would be worth doing, or a damn good cleaning if not and then I would create some interest in the back garden with planting trees and shrubs within the garden space, not just down the sides of the lawn, diverting your eye to various places and giving you some privacy from the road at the same time. Have a look at some garden plan ideas on Houzz for inspiration, or speak to a pro garden designer, it can actually save you money paying for a garden plan, it stops you making costly mistakes. Comments (7)Definitely get some plants back in there. However it looks like your photos are before and after removing plants along the boundary so perhaps this isn’t part of the plan. Could you plant some low shrubs under the window and mulch them with gravel to suppress the weeds? Including additional areas of gravel where the cars aren’t generally parked would help to soften all that expanse of hard landscaping. You could then plant ground hugging plants, that don’t mind being driven over on occasion, into the gravel....See More
PRO9 years agoObviously completely dependent upon your budget and how much you want to do but the radical answer would be to change all the roof tiles which are dating the property. This is a lovely house that could really look amazing with a change in roof tile. Your windows look good so don't touch them - this is good news as they are the bigger ticket item usually - so next up is the porch. I would suggest a new timber framed porch to give the house some wow factor. Other than that sharpen your shears, trim the bushes. add some large potted shrubs on either side and you're good to go.

- 9 years agoIt depends how far you want to go and how much money you have and if a big change will add more to the value than you spend.
The building line may well be forward of the front door because of the garage position you may get permission to build forward which could mean you could change the front radically.
