By cross pattern do you mean herringbone? I didn't think that was particularly popular right now.

I think the best pattern would be brick pattern (same as a stretcher bond in bricks) laid with the 'courses' going along the room.

Would it be possible for you to upload images of the floor and samples of tiles? By doing so, I could advise you according to what I see visually and see how the pattern relates to one another and so on. In order to avoid a potential costly mistake.

This is an example of what you could do with wall tiles, in this kitchen it is positioned in a chevron setting to provide a visual texture and in turn interest. However yes it could turn out to be a time consuming and costly process. Although this image is not an example of a galley kitchen and what you are after, it is just an idea of what could be done with tiles. A simple suggestion for your dilemma however would be to tile the walls in a horizontal position and it does not have to be in the same direction as the floor. Again, please do move the samples around yourself to see what looks best.
