Floorboard help

I am doing an extension on my small terraced Victorian terrace and will need to replace most of the floorboards. Does anyone have any advice as to whether I should just buy new (from Wickes or somewhere similar) or reclaimed, and if so where can I source them? I am based in Hackney, East London.

If you are planning to have a stripped floor i'd go with reclaim to stay true to the period and get a nice patina on them. Ebay is a great source for floorboards and you'll be able to narrow it down to someone nearer you, although there are lots of companies that will deliver nationally.

Thank you. That was my original thought too although that would probaby be more work better in the long run

Whitened oak is very different to whitened pine. Pine is very yellow and when whitened can go a bit pink. You can use Lye to bleach it, then white oil, then clear oil but it is a huge faff. You could try Osmo Raw, this would keep them pale but not go white. I wouldn't rush it, take time to really think about what will work and make sure images you look at are pine and not oak. We did osmo polytints 3040 followed by 0smo raw 3044. Wood finishes direct give advice about this. See their blog’ beautiful white wood finishes for dreamy white interiors’. Prior to any of the osmo we applied lye to the floors. This is apparently what will stop the eventual yellowing of any other treatment. The final effect is very natural looking. See the photo of white pine with oval room blue. This room was finished about 3 years ago and gets full sun as it is south facing.It is really easy to keep and does not need sanding back again before re applying in the future. It is not for you if you like the shiny polished floor look! Hope this helps.

Restoring Elm Floorboards Help

Please help, we have been restoring our Elm wood floor boards having cleaned them up and sanded them (first error as now some nails are poking through a bit despite it being a light sand ) We have had to repair and replace a few with other slightly different coloured elm boards that you can see in the picture. We love the look of the floor as it is but want to unify the finish with oil wax or something. We have tried English oak which has a tint to it on this board as you can see but it’s a bit false looking. Are their any professionals or experienced renovators out there that can advise us?
