Great room! To me the dining set and sideboard/dresser is a bit too much 'mid century' for a room that is more traditional. How about replacing the sideboard with a slimmer console? Instead of a feature wall you could group art work or photos. I'd replace the light fitting with something that makes more of a statement. I think either carpet or wooden floors could work, but I'd replace your current rug, with a larger possibly circular rug under the table. A pale green colour maybe?

I agree with Jen that the big sideboard/dresser is a bit too overpowering and dark. I'd replace it with a low, light coloured sideboard (Dwell). Would also change the light fixture. Found some chairs (Made.com) that could look good with your curtains. Wonder if luxury vinyl tile in a (lime)stone pattern would be a good idea for the floor.

Thank you for all your comments, a new light fitting or chandelier would certainly make an impact. I also agree that the teak unit does dominate.

We have lots of pictures and some of my mother's paintings that are not displayed to their best.

I'm also wondering whether to match the chair seat pads to the curtains or to go lighter.

Assuming you're in Kent or Sussex you could always have a photo framed of Londoners on their annual hop picking holiday, either Victorian or 20th century. THere are quite a lot of images online

Hi there, lovely to have such an unusual home. I think I would replace the carpet with either a wooden or tiled floor so long as it has a high sheen to reflect the light. A large round rug for under the table, perhaps in a natural material or neutral colour. Definitely a statement light fitting for over the table. I don't think you need to match the seat pads with the curtains, maybe you could have a linen table cloth laid like a handkerchief for a more informal country look. A chair and side table by the fireside with a faux sheepskin would look nice. I too think the sideboard is a little dominating for the room. Group the artwork together and make a display of it in one area. Since you're in an oast house you could use dried or artificial hops for table decoration. Some inspiration.

I would personally sell the dining set anyway as it doesn't really go in such a traditional room, and a circular table of any style makes more sense in a circular room. As it is in fashion again you might be able to sell them for a decent amount of money to go towards a new set?

Regarding feature wall/stencils/murals: you could stencil a border of hops around the room, in a complementary shade of green or gold to your lovely curtains. At dado or picture rail height - which I imagine are very difficult to fit in a round room! - it could even act as a way of dividing the space so you could paint different colours above/below.

Hi, we can see that the room lends itself to lighter colours and the wall colour is really helping to lift it. We'd agree that it's a good idea not to go dark on the floor. To keep the feel light but cosy and capture a lovely contrast with your dark furniture, we'd suggest a natural oak. This style would also be very in keeping with the period fireplace and overall traditional look. Some ideas for you to have a think about below:

I think you have to continue with existing dark oak wood floor in dining, then get a rug area (light colour and neutral) under the table and chairs.

New year, new dining room.

Thank you for all your suggestions and advice, they have been really helpful and we are finally making progress and incorporating many of your ideas.

We have freshened up the room with pale cream walls and replaced the lighting with a central vintage style glass coolie shade from Chestnut Lighting and a Dunelm Wooden Floor Lamp.

The nails are in the wall and we will be grouping a collection of pictures and photos on one wall rather than having then randomly spaced. They don't look straight in the photo but they look better in real life!

The room is now cleared out as we are waiting on wood flooring in an antique oak stain with a sheen. We are then thinking of a circular cream rug or carpet with bound edges.

We have trialled different layouts and the smaller unit is going and the larger one is going on the the blank wall behind the door. This opens up the room.

We are getting near the finishing line and I will post final photos before too long, I hope.

Finally got the furniture back in and using our dining room once again :-)
