I would pick a fabric that doesn’t match, but does look good with the silver sofa and have both living room sofas in that fabric.

The kitchen and drawing room are actually 2 rooms separated by two sets of double doors on either side of a hallway. We are planning on leaving both sets permanently open but the rooms can be shut off if required. The idea being that it’s kind of open plan but not. I’d like the two rooms to flow together if poss.
Kitchen sofa at far end of kitchen opposite the doors so far enough away from drawing room that it doesn’t have to exactly match.
I think you’re right though, 2 the same would look more formal. We have a separate tv room where we can be a bit more scruffy

Kitchen sofa is plain but worried about getting patterned formal sofas or sofas in a particular colour in case it reduces my decorating options in the future. Too expensive to change the sofas in a few years time.
Both rooms are south facing with bifold doors so get loads of light. Do you reckon I can get away with colored cushions on sofas with such a traditional style?

Oh ok! I think I'd still stick with the same fabric, if you were having chairs opposite a sofa I'd pick a different fabric. The fabric you've chosen is neutral so you'll have numerous decorating options and you can definitely add colour for cushions

Not sure on your plans for a coffee table but an upholstered footstool in an accent colour could work well. Just put a tray on top and accessorise

Funnily enough minnie101 I was thinking of doing exactly that! I was also planning on putting the whole lot on a rug or a bordered carpet (if such things exist) so maybe I could think about pattern or colour on that?

It’s so hard as we have a whole house to decorate and furnish and we don’t really know where to start as we have no furniture to bring with us. Kitchen people are pushing for colours so I think I’m going to have to use my cheap (ish) kitchen sofa as my whole inspiration

We are aiming for the New England meets Georgian look so at the moment the kitchen is going to be mainly whitish units with maybe a light grey island (which has a walnut breakfast bar).

No, I didn't necessarily mean a patterned fabric, but I would go for a grey in a darker shade or a different colour, like a (soft) blue perhaps.

I'd also bring in a soft blue (maybe a blue grey to tie in with the kitchen) either for walls, footstool or rug etc. Very New England! You could then use darker blues for a few patterned cushions maybe with a shade of orange as your accent colour. Something chinoiserie style be it a ginger jar or lamps would work well with the style. I was also going to suggest panelling of sorts but see you have a whole ideabook dedicated to it! Perhaps also an antique Georgian piece of furniture

Yes, a pop of orange in cushions plus maybe a dark blue chair? and blue/grey on the walls. The rooms are quite big (8m x 7m kitchen, 8m x5m drawing room separated by 1.8m corridor) so the plan is to have dado height panelling in vaulted entrance and hallway with the whole fireplace wall panelled in drawing room. White of course!!
Stairs are going to be walnut and white with wrought iron spindles and white panelling up the side. Do you think I’d get away with painting hallway a warmer greige colour as it’s north facing and I don’t want it to feel too cold.

Lol! I agree, it sounds lovely, I bet you can't wait until it's finished, it must be amazing to design your own house especially after all those years renting! A greige could work depending on the light (it sometimes just looks grey in north facing rooms) or maybe something like farrow and ball stony ground could work with the blue grey walls. I've got F&B elephants breath in my hall and landing which has a really large north facing window on the landing but it's not cold at all plus a lot of light comes up the stairs etc. A dark blue chair sounds good too.

Elephants breath is one of my favourite colours, so versatile. Yet again you are a mind reader as this was the colour I was thinking. Maybe trying to colour match in Dulux though for cost!

It's a great colour! I might try Johnstones for F&B colour matching. I decided to paint my radiators after doing the walls and used a dulux colour match and it had a very pink undertone against the walls so had to do them again.

If you get any paint colours mixed -take a photo of the info label before you start painting ( incase it gets dropped on) and print it out for future reference, do you can order more paint to the exact same mix - if you are super organised - have a folder for each room saying which paint is used and what fabrics and furniture fro where etc too - as you do forget after a while - and if you need to touch up or buy an extra cushion etc - having the info to hand will be useful !
