Whole home makeover.

In preparation for our coming of age where work is not the only option, we are planning a complete refurbishment of our 3 storey terrace house in Peckham It is a modest size house about 4 metre x 8m floor area with gardens front and back. Some structural work, new central heating system, rewiring and kitchen. Two separate sleeping areas one in basement for possible airbb use and top floor for our use both with en suite bathrooms and walk in wardrobe. Also possible roof top extension. House has listed features but is a blank canvas internally. Shared space with kitchen and lounge on middle floor. We prefer to use local architect and design talent where possible. House situated in a quiet street on the edge of a park. We have a fairly healthy budget and possible window for work of six months.

Initially I'd suggest you contact some concept planners to get an idea of what you can do, then builders - the concept planners probably have many contacts.

Hi everyone! He's been living there over 20 years now and completely revamped the room when he first moved in (adding in the fireplace, dado rail, adding the fan design to the ceiling!). It all looked very fresh when it was first done but 20 years is a long time. The ceiling is just standard, the holes you can see are from where he's having spotlights put in. I've searched Egyptian Cotton and agree that this is a lovely warm neutral, thank you for the recommendation I will definitely let him know to check it out. I love the idea of viewing the outside window as a feature wall and incorporating these natural elements into the room, my dads house backs on to woodlands and is surrounded by trees so it's all very green out there.

I may be biased as I grew up in a similar looking 50s chalet bungalow but I like it. Personally before making any changes to the Windows I would add a light-mid colour front door, maybe a nickel porch light and a potted plant in a light colour pot. It all just looks a bit dark to me and I'm not sure the planting is really helping. Apologies for the terrible photoshop but I would change/add some silvery green plants to give contrast against the bricks. If you still don't like it I would reassess then!

it depends on what other colours you have going on inside the house. you want the front door to be an introduction to the house and reflect the interior - rather than be a total mismatch which can be jarring. it's also got to work with the exterior of the house, colourwise - i do love an orange door (for example), but not with orange bricks, or black render (gets a bit halloween-y).

My guess is - “who should we consider helping with this ?”

There are local pros listed under areas if you do a search on Houzz - and there’s people like me who work remotely too - so don’t need to be near - just click on the name or icon of any pros to see their pro page - you should also be able to see some of their work and reviews from past clients - and you can even look to see if they ever help out on the dilemma threads too ! Their posts can give an insight into how busy they are, ( ie on here all day long = not busy working ) or can give you an idea of their way of solving problems etc .

What an exciting project. I'd ask your neighbours for recommendations for architects, particularly as parts of the building are listed. I'd love to see some before and after photos!

Hi David. What a lovely project - how fantastic to have a blank canvas! As well as asking for local recommendations for interior designers, Houzz is a good place to have a look around, or you could try BIID (British Institute of Interior Designers - biid.org.uk). I think the main thing at the beginning of a project like this is to find someone who you think you could work well with - especially as projects this size can take a long time, so it's important to feel the fit is right - and who offers the right sort of design packages for you. For example, some might offer full design, contractor management and implementation, whereas you feel that you just want some direction and help with the layout or lighting plans, or that you want to complete the work in stages.
