First Kitchen remodel - advice please?

Hi All,

We are complete home design novices tackling our first home. We are in the process of ripping out our old 1970's style Kitchen and completely restyling the room including plastering walls and ceilings to remove artex, installing new (second hand) units, worktop, tiles etc. I have been tasked with the decision on the paint for the room (walls and cupboards) but as it's our first home and the first room we are updating I am somewhat overwhelmed by the choices available.

The plan is to paint the base units a mid soft grey tone (like Dulux Chic Shadow?) with a white marble effect laminate worktop, Matt metro marble effect tiles and the wall units to be an off white colour. I've currently chosen Dulux Rock Salt for the walls but I'm unsure whether to opt for Dulux Trade Pure Brilliant White for the ceilings or stick with the wall colour up top? We have bought Dulux Easycare as the Kitchen range was out of stock so not sure what finish would be required for the ceiling?

That then leaves me with which colour and brand/finish of paint to use for the wall and floor units bearing in mind the top cabinets will be lighter and need to tone with the Rock Salt walls? There are so many options out there and I don't want the room to feel bare or stark! Has anyone ever used Wilko own brand paint and can you share any feedback? I like their Cosy Grey for the base units but don't think it comes in the right type of paint for wood?

The other option would be to replace the Cupboard doors altogether as I would really prefer Shaker style but not sure if it's worth the hassle/cost?

The room is a long Kitchen/Diner South West facing so gets lots of sun in the afternoon and we will be having a white washed Oak wood effect LVT flooring.

Please help a confused newbie with her first design project? Opinions and advice gladly welcomed!

As you've chosen Dulux Rock Salt for your walls, I would be inclined to have their satinwood paint mixed in the same colour for your wall units in stead of an off white.

An off white is likely to clash with your tiles and worktop. Whereas, if you have your wall units the same colour as your walls, they will tie in and give a more polished, seamless look.

If you want you could go for a darker grey on the bottom. Pain the units in Satinwood as it's a longer lasting paint. If you like the Wilko paint colour, get a tester pot and get it mixed and colour matched at Dulux, it will be the right paint then.

A dark pewter grey will go with your tiles, worktop and wall units.

The ceilings should be matt white.

I hope you're taking the opportunity to have a little shift about of the units, the great big Chimney is far too large for the room and needs to come out along with the shelf running round the top.

Here you see if you use the light colour on top to match the walls, with the dark on the bottom everything looks light and airy.

Thanks @Manaboutthehouse The image of the kitchen units was taken in the previous owners house as we got the Kitchen second hand so we will be changing the layout to suit our own kitchen so do not worry we wont be recreating their huge chimney! We have gone for a Stainless Steel Chimney hood and Free standing Fridge/freezer with a white ceramic sink and will change the door knobs to brushed steel/chrome cup handles on the drawers and knobs on the doors to match. I agree I want it too look light and airy but I was worried if I did the wall units in the same colour as the wall they would blend in too much and it would look a bit odd? We will be having under cabinet lighting above the worktop and two large pendants over the dining table at the other end of the room also.

That's a pretty big space that could be utilised in various ways to suit your needs. The way we work ( we don't sell product - just design ) we'd go through a detailed questionnaire with you via email or on the phone /FaceTime etc and then offer up four of five ( sometimes more !) alternatives in sketch form, then work with one - or elements of each - that you have chosen, to come up with a solution that works to suit the family's needs and the space you have. It's a bit more involved than just putting furniture in the space, as its tailored to you and your wish list ! It takes from a Monday to the Friday - and we keep you in the loop, as part of the process, and the finished design and item listing then allows you to shop around for the best deal. For a project this size - our fee would be about the same price as a good dishwasher ! So in proportion - not much of the budget overall !! To get the most bang for your buck I would leave the cabinets unpainted (because it’s hard to get a great finish as a DIYer and you could end up cheapening the look). Instead I would get rid of the orange tones by painting the walls a grey with a green quality, replacing the worktops with a laminate that looks like stone, a patterned lino will be a nice upgrade for the floor- again choosing grey and stone colours. Lastly I would get rid of the strip light and replace it with inset ceiling spots and under cabinet lights. Expect to pay £600 to have the worktop done (more expensive as the sink and hob have to be disconnected and reconnected), £300 for fitting lights and £200 for an inexpensive lino and laying. Painting the wall is a job you might well feel confident doing and you shouldn’t spend much on paint.

Can’t believe the fitter says it’s what you can expect with the budget. A good fitter is a good fitter whether the kitchen is from Howdens or a top kitchen company. My kitchen was from Wrens so a similar kitchen, nothing fancy but affordable at the time. There were no chips or damage. I wouldn’t pay him a penny more. Your photos are difficult to see in context and not easy to see exactly what we are looking at so I suggest you take photos further back for when you contact Citizens Advice.
