Kitchen/dining room design
Hi, i need help deciding what style to go for in a house we are purchasing. It’s a Victorian era house. Need help on design and layout for this room, want it to be living and dining. Open plan kitchen is other side of this pic.

Comments (16)Have you thought of rearranging the furniture so the tv isn't the focal point? Furniture against walls can make a room appear smaller. If the budget permits I would add a coffee table to bring furniture into the middle of the room. I would also add a mirror to the dining area to bounce light and maybe install a low hanging pendant light over the table. I would also choose a neutral coloured rug as using a single colour for an item becomes the focal point. Grey is a good modern neutral for walls. If you want to use paper on a smaller wall choose a small pattern that won't date unless you don't mind repapering to keep it up to date. There are some really fantastic papers around at the moment such as chinoiserie, bold contemporary and typography but it depends on your preferred style? Maybe use plain (not patterned as this may date or your taste will change) velvet or silk curtains to soften the room. Use different colours and textures for the accessories to avoid block colours as per comment above. Comments (29)Hey Nisha! I love your Option 4 and what a fab design- looks amazing!!! I think Option 4 has lots of space and flow through the room without having to walk around furniture and is a great adult space with formal and informal dining with the addition of the breakfast bar. If little people do come along in the future and you need a play space when they're a little bit older, you can always whip out the breakfast bar and move the table up closer to the kitchen at that point- it's a lovely flexible design. Comments (6)Regarding plug sockets - you can never have too many! Make sure there are enough in the kitchen at counter-top level. Either side of the bed is very useful and I would recommend one in the hall to plug the hoover into. I would also suggest a hotel style additional light switch by the bed head (its a small luxury but I love being able to turn it off without going back to the door). It doesn't look like there's that much counter top space in the kitchen so I would recommend buying something like this as an island: http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/kitchen-products/kitchen-islands-trolleys/stenstorp-kitchen-island-white-oak-art-60323021/ This would also help to divide the kitchen/living space and provides space for a couple of bar stools for casual dining/chatting whilst cooking. If your daughter likes this idea then you may want to have a pendant light fitting over the island. Consider bathroom storage and where a shaver socket would be best placed for electric toothbrushes etc. If opting for spotlighting then get dimmer switches so you can control how bright they are. It also looks like the bathroom door and hall cupboard door will intersect each other at the moment so I would suggest having the bathroom door open inwards instead....See Moreminnie101
6 years agoDo you have pictures of the kitchen at all? I don’t think you need to have a traditional look in a Victorian house as they tend to suit most designs. I don’t know if you’re going for a more glam or relaxed look and whether you will include a tv? If it was mine I think I’d just go for a large dining table central to the room with a banquette one side (facing the tv if you’re having one). I love a drinks trolley so would add that in the right alcove and display shelves in the other with the pink chair and floor lamp in front with a small side table. Ps I’ve added this dining chair but feel it’s too much brass so still looking unless you went for similar to the chair in the first pic! I don’t know if this is your kind of style at all?

6 years agoTo add a modern Victorian look you could go for the banquette in a similar fabric (just the floral, not the two tone) or add similar art or a portrait or portrait wall. I would probably also paint the walls to complement the cream units so would be useful to know the rooms orientation

Firstly it looks like a lovely house you are going to be moving to! In regards to layout, have you thought about having your dining area on the back left wall? Potentially a bench style seating on the back wall could be lovely! Couple of examples of what I mean below.
Then I would have some arm chairs on either side of the french doors with some nested tables. That way you can sit and have a coffee in the morning looking out into the garden.
It would also open up the space so you can be chatting to guests and family at the same time as making a meal.
Style wise, I think scandi style would work if that is your preferred, but you can easily mix Scandinavian elements with more traditional pieces for an eclectic and cosy feel.
