Hi, i need help deciding what style to go for in a house we are purchasing. It’s a Victorian era house. Need help on design and layout for this room, want it to be living and dining. Open plan kitchen is other side of this pic.

There is another living room so just want an extra seating area in here so we can use everyday. I’ve attached the plan. The kitchen is cream gloss with a grey quartz style worktop. The flooring will be staying the same as that’s what runs through the house downstairs. My current house is scandi style now, but I think as there are some lovely original features in this house I’d like a little more contemporary/traditional as there are original features throughout the house.

It's difficult to see how much floor area you have here, in the absence of a floor plan. However, I would suggest that you place your dining table near the kitchen area, and "zone" the sitting area with a rug. If you have another living room, you could just have one sofa and an easy chair in the living area and have the other room as a further sitting room. We had a similar house when our children were young and used the second sitting room as a "grown ups" room- no toys or snacks in there. However, if that is your only room I think looking carefully at how you could separate the cooking/ dining and the sitting areas would make the room look more cohesive.

I agree a floor plan would help if you have one. In terms of styles and colours it’s hard to say as you don’t have an ideabook set up. Why not browse through pictures on Houzz and set up an ideabook annotating what you like about each room? If you look up particular styles ie Scandi, industrial, modern country etc etc to see what you like. Do you also have a picture of the kitchen as you may want to tie that in?

Hello Jeannette, what a lovely project! I've worked on a number of bungalows and they have their own unique challenges. Making the spaces work for our needs today, and for your own family needs have to be the priorities. I would suggest you appoint an interior designer before thinking in detail about the kitchen. An interior designer will find out how you want to use the space and come up with clever floor plan that is workable and beautiful. This is going to be a really important investment for you. That made me smile and is so true OnePlan. Personally I always go for a kitchen diner for the same reasons as Jaimie but also because the sense of space is so much more relaxing to work in as well. Choose a good classic design and colour for the kitchen units so that you can zone the dining area in complimentary colour if you want to.

Hey Nisha! I love your Option 4 and what a fab design- looks amazing!!! I think Option 4 has lots of space and flow through the room without having to walk around furniture and is a great adult space with formal and informal dining with the addition of the breakfast bar. If little people do come along in the future and you need a play space when they're a little bit older, you can always whip out the breakfast bar and move the table up closer to the kitchen at that point- it's a lovely flexible design. In the meantime Option 4 feels light and open and spacious and looks fab to me. What a long way you've come since your first post! How exciting!

Hi Tas! If it was me then I wouldn't continue the kitchen back along that wall and instead create more of a galley kitchen with an island facing towards the back and a bank of full height units against the wall. This would make the rest of the room more useable by keeping the kitchen more compact and with as much storage as you need. In open plan spaces like that I find that one of the things that people find most difficult is deciding where to put the TV! I've had a lot of people come to me after they've had that kind of open plan design, but it doesn't really work for what they want to use it for. Do you have pictures of the kitchen at all? I don’t think you need to have a traditional look in a Victorian house as they tend to suit most designs. I don’t know if you’re going for a more glam or relaxed look and whether you will include a tv? If it was mine I think I’d just go for a large dining table central to the room with a banquette one side (facing the tv if you’re having one). I love a drinks trolley so would add that in the right alcove and display shelves in the other with the pink chair and floor lamp in front with a small side table. Ps I’ve added this dining chair but feel it’s too much brass so still looking unless you went for similar to the chair in the first pic! I don’t know if this is your kind of style at all?

To add a modern Victorian look you could go for the banquette in a similar fabric (just the floral, not the two tone) or add similar art or a portrait or portrait wall. I would probably also paint the walls to complement the cream units so would be useful to know the rooms orientation

Hi Jess,

Firstly it looks like a lovely house you are going to be moving to! In regards to layout, have you thought about having your dining area on the back left wall? Potentially a bench style seating on the back wall could be lovely! Couple of examples of what I mean below.

Then I would have some arm chairs on either side of the french doors with some nested tables. That way you can sit and have a coffee in the morning looking out into the garden.

It would also open up the space so you can be chatting to guests and family at the same time as making a meal.

Style wise, I think scandi style would work if that is your preferred, but you can easily mix Scandinavian elements with more traditional pieces for an eclectic and cosy feel.
