can we make a kitchen-diner work in this space?
Part of the plans were to shift an internal wall, which we could still do, giving a space of approx 4.1 x 4.2m. Could this be enough for a comfortable kitchen diner? We feel it's looking a bit tight for table and chairs and leaves little worktop prep space.

I've a mind to say demolish the conservatory as it doesn't provide you with any beneficial living space, plus, i'm guessing it doesn't have a glass roof and therefore, zaps the light from the potential kitchen diner.
Thus, I got rid of it and slightly amended the room dimensions.
The lounge area gets 4m square ( more or less ). It's currently 4.23 wide, and I made it 4m long.
The French doors open in to the lounge as you have on your plan.
As I had pinched 85cm from your lounge layout, I added it to the kitchen diner. A table and Chairs will not fit in to a gap of only 1.5m wide whatever you do. Therefore, I made that area 2.17m - which is still tight but do'able . Our dining table and chairs seats 8. 3 on each side with one at either end. Even when you pull the chairs out to sit down it fits in a gap of 1.85m.
( I didn't touch your load bearing wall )
This leaves the kitchen area as 2.57m ( the same as it is now ) -
If you run the units down either side and put in a small Island down the middle, measuring approx 1.75m long, you get unit space combined of 6.89m. Plenty!! Plus, as you've demolished the conservatory you now get your light back.
I think that if you were to approach one of the great concept planners on here. they'd be able to do this professionally for you. Or, you could have the plans checked over by a builder and drawn up yourself of course.

Comments (9)I have the following comments / suggestions: - I'd leave the cupboard and use it to house washing machine. There is nothing worse than having washing machine noise in a kitchen diner. Also, I think the space works a bit better if you leave the cupboard in place. Comments (7)Hi, I definitely wouldn’t install a toilet next to the dining area (no privacy), not would you have room to create a corridor - you’d need 3ft for sure and that would leave you with only 7 ft 7” in the dining area, which is a bit of a squash. So the best idea is to create a utility/toilet in the kitchen, as you say, on the left behind the stairs. If the wall between the back door and the sitting room is 3ft-3ft 6” I think you could create this space without moving the back door. But it would be big enough fir toilet, cloakroom basin and the washing machine and dryer stacked, if you have one. You mentioned turning the window into glass doors, but I’d be reluctant to do that simply because you then lose more wall space for the kitchen cabinets and you’re already losing a wall between the kitchen and dining area. But you could change the back door for a fully glazed one to let more light in. I tried putting an island with overhang (3ft in depth to allow for bar stools and storage) but the space would very tight, even running the island vertically on the plan as you need the best part of 3ft to walk either wide of it, so possibly a peninsular would fit best. As you are short of wall space for the fridge freezer, would you consider installing it under the stairs, depending on its size? Ps I meant to say, best option for the toilet door in the kitchen would be a sliding ?barn style door or pocket door if you had the room....See MoreHelp! How can we make our downstairs space work!?
Comments (7)For a short term, minimal budget solution you could try something as simple as removing the wall mounted cupboards on the right and switching them to open shelving. This would allow you to put a fridge freezer in the gap and you can set the width & height of your shelves to suit your appliances that maybe don’t get used daily. Keep one of the cupboards to box in the boiler and hide it from view if that suits and you maybe even able to re-use the units to hide the fridge freezer or the doors to hide appliances. Some paint or vinyl on the cupboard doors would totally change their look. You could also add a slide out work surface or a small island (on lockable castors) to give you a little extra worktop space. There’s some lovely innovative solutions to making your current kitchen configuration more practical - things like pull out vertical drawers, pull down shelves etc that again are relatively low cost and would allow you time to plan & save for any bigger architectural changes that you want to make long term....See More- 8 years ago

If you can ascertain whether or not the Conservatory is built well enough for conversion to a 'proper room', and you can open the back of the house with a steel so that you don't need doors at that point, then I would consider not having the conservatory.
If you can have it opened up with bi-fold doors and roof lights, then great, more expensive, as it has to built up and the roof amended, plus a steel put in. You may benefit from the extra 8 feet of room it gives you.
However, If you can't do that, then I think it detracts from the future layout, and I would stand behind the decision to knock it down.
PRO8 years agoHello Daza, I think your kitchen has great potential and that a few adjustments are enough to have a comfortable space. If you remove the wall marked in red, that would give you an open space that would feel much bigger. If you're concerned about the preparation space - think about an island, this would give you the possibility to relocate the main elements (sink, fridge and hob). The best way to design a kitchen is doing a triangle between these elements, which will provide the best flow.
