can we make a kitchen-diner work in this space?
Part of the plans were to shift an internal wall, which we could still do, giving a space of approx 4.1 x 4.2m. Could this be enough for a comfortable kitchen diner? We feel it's looking a bit tight for table and chairs and leaves little worktop prep space.

I've a mind to say demolish the conservatory as it doesn't provide you with any beneficial living space, plus, i'm guessing it doesn't have a glass roof and therefore, zaps the light from the potential kitchen diner.
Thus, I got rid of it and slightly amended the room dimensions.
The lounge area gets 4m square ( more or less ). It's currently 4.23 wide, and I made it 4m long.
The French doors open in to the lounge as you have on your plan.
As I had pinched 85cm from your lounge layout, I added it to the kitchen diner. A table and Chairs will not fit in to a gap of only 1.5m wide whatever you do. Therefore, I made that area 2.17m - which is still tight but do'able . Our dining table and chairs seats 8. 3 on each side with one at either end. Even when you pull the chairs out to sit down it fits in a gap of 1.85m.
( I didn't touch your load bearing wall )
This leaves the kitchen area as 2.57m ( the same as it is now ) -
If you run the units down either side and put in a small Island down the middle, measuring approx 1.75m long, you get unit space combined of 6.89m. Plenty!! Plus, as you've demolished the conservatory you now get your light back.
I think that if you were to approach one of the great concept planners on here. they'd be able to do this professionally for you. Or, you could have the plans checked over by a builder and drawn up yourself of course.

Comments (8)hi - with this new door configuration it opens up further possibilities - safety wise it's best to move your hob in from the edge of the island - so pan handles are less 'knock able ' designing to suit rooms is ok - but much better to design to suit the people using the room too ! to do this effectively a good designer will need to find out as much as possible about you and the members if your family - how you cook/ shop how often you entertain etc etc it takes time and when done well provides the best results for the room. this is what I do for a living - I don't sell product - purely design !- so instead of offering 'free design ' like studios do ( then making margin on the products you buy) - I charge a fee to design and then you shop around and get the best deal saving much more than the design fee in the process ! so you can see with this in mind - I can't design it for free for you on this thread - but happy to take it further in a professional capacity if you want to drop me an email ! Comments (24)Yes we needed an RSJ and all of the walls underpinning as there were no foundations. Was very costly but definitely worth it as we live in that end of the house. I think that With having an older property, costs do just spiral. I can’t remember how much the RSJ was, sorry. i think our building work was about £25000. Can you leave the fireplace in and have it open so you can see it from both sides? Comments (18)I guess this will come down to how much you want to spend, if you are prepared to do an extension out the back then assume you are comfortable with some structural work. Also if you are happy to lose the garage or some of it you actually have a much larger space to work with. If it were my house and I had the budget to do a complete ‘rejig’, i would do the following: 1. Push the bathroom, utility area and storage areas into the garage but still leaving a garage door with a much smaller ‘garage’ space for stuff we just dump in the garage. Add a door if possible to the garage much closer to the front door to access the storage area. Access the bathoorm and utility via the currently under stairs door. 2. Now move the kitchen to the right into the space currently occupied by the bathroom and study, creating space for a nice size island, room fo an American fridge freezer and tall cupboards etc. 3. Move the study to the left hand side, which would run from the garden wall where the first bifolds end down to the existing vertical beam column, effecitvely making use of this as part of that study and therefore it isnt just a column in the middle of the room. 4. You will be left with a large L shaped kitchen lounge diner, where you can either choose to have a play area in front of the kitchen or tv snug and dining area to the left of it or vice versa. Whatever suits! Obviously this is without seeing the actual spaces and room dimensions to see how much open space you would get but looks like could work from your floor plan. If you can ascertain whether or not the Conservatory is built well enough for conversion to a 'proper room', and you can open the back of the house with a steel so that you don't need doors at that point, then I would consider not having the conservatory.
If you can have it opened up with bi-fold doors and roof lights, then great, more expensive, as it has to built up and the roof amended, plus a steel put in. You may benefit from the extra 8 feet of room it gives you.
However, If you can't do that, then I think it detracts from the future layout, and I would stand behind the decision to knock it down.
PRO6 years agoHello Daza, I think your kitchen has great potential and that a few adjustments are enough to have a comfortable space. If you remove the wall marked in red, that would give you an open space that would feel much bigger. If you're concerned about the preparation space - think about an island, this would give you the possibility to relocate the main elements (sink, fridge and hob). The best way to design a kitchen is doing a triangle between these elements, which will provide the best flow.
