Blank Kitchen Space...

We’ve just had the kitchen renovated and couldn’t decide on what to do around the fireplace. We currently have a gigantic blank expanse of wall begging for something, but we have no idea what. How to use this space for something great? (The kitchen belongs to the monster in the photo)

I would definitely keep the play kitchen in there until little monster grows out of it, they grow up so fast and before you know it they don’t come out of their bedrooms!

It looks like a lovely kitchen. If it was me, I'd do a large piece of favourite art/a print. Depends what you are into on that front. Alternatively, a mirror always looks good over a fireplace. An ornate frame painted in similar colours to your door and shelving.

That’s the kitchen from the other direction. Pretty bright with no big splashes of colour. Would something bright be too much?? Some have suggested bright display plates. Sounds weird to me...

I have to say i didn't think of the radiator!! and now that i notice it, it is a bit of an eye sore, thanks for that; i'll check out your link. and Wow, I had never thought of the board with the hooks! Thank you Chantelle, i should i said the island is built with leg/feet room on the right side, so i will put 4 bar stools up to it. I definitely love the idea of seating in the kitchen! The linen board looks very nice! and i could add colour to it by using some pictures as well, good idea! i like the shelving idea too, i could definitely use the space but i just dont want people to knock their heads if thats the main space for guests to stand/sit and socalize. You could go for another plant (real or good fake) for top shelf above TV to soften and pull the alcoves together. I would agree with Kate that both walls just need some artwork, maybe smaller ones above the sofa and a large piece for the blank wall.

Choosing art is a very personal thing. I have a couple of generic suggestions that would work in the space - a large mirror in a nice frame or a gallery wall with black and white photos of family and friends in random frames purchased from charity/second hand shops. An easy art project would be buying a large canvas, taping a chevron pattern on it and painting it black, white and gold (or alternative colours to suit).

It is lovely. There's quite a lot going on so display plates might be too much.

How about a funky circular mirror.

Or a nice big poster from not on the high street or somewhere with personalised words/family tree type things.

What are you into as a family? Something like these prints by James Brown are nice, and also interesting for when people are standing around with a cup of tea to read. He does them on loads of other subjects

Lovely family kitchen. Looks like you dont need extra storage so other than clock/artwork ideas what about: displaying kids artwork; magnetic family calendar; or a bit of an upgrade on a scratch off map and install a push pin (or similar) world map of places you've been or plan to go. Some ideas below .

Think a plate display would look great - if you stick to only white and blue plates it would stop it looking too busy and tie in with the modern-traditionalvibe.

How about getting ‘the monster’ to paint something on a large canvas and include her hand prints and name?!

Hi Dominic, your kitchen is lovely! We would agree with Susanna and that a circular mirror would work really well. You already have the display cabinet to the RHS side of the chimney breast so that will of course have plenty of family photos etc sitting on its shelves. With that in mind it would be best to introduce one large singular item like the round mirror otherwise the space will start to feel cluttered. Also avoid a rectangular mirror as everything else in the space is very square so the round would break it up. Maybe something like in the following link... Good luck!

I love bevwald's idea. Large canvas or something framed for a more professional look.

Children's paintings often look great when framed.

Some great ideas thanks. I am really tempted by the kids artwork thing but we have a playroom to decorate as well so I think it will end up in there. Leaning towards a nice mirror at the moment
