kitchen worktop and flooring

So we have chosen these kitchen units dark grey oak to embrace the darkness of our northern-facing kitchen. I want porcelain flooring but am not keen on the wood effect in tiles. We wanted stainless steel worktops but have decided against it as too many people said they would scratch and end up not shiny. So we will probably go for quartz or granite. However, we are struggling with colours. We need a contrast from the darkness I think. We cook a lot and my other half is messy so we need easy to clean! Any advice gratefully received. Thank you.

HI, HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT CONCRETE EFFECT WORKTOPS? SAINSBURYS HOMEBASE AND IKEA DO SOME GREAT ONES. HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT GREY GLOSSY MARBLE FLOOR? TOTAL TILES - SELL REALLY HIGH END DESIGNER TILES AT A STEAL. THE KITCHEN LOOKS REALLY NICE, GOOD LUCK.

I believe the white/off white tops are easy to keep clean and show less marks than darker ones (so numerous kitchen places have told me!) they would be a nice contrast to your units and would match with a lighter toned floor.

Or, if you want a contrasting colour ie grey, then go darker on the floor with a matching worktop.

Hello Anne, Honed would be my suggestion as I just love the finish. Get a sample or two and see what you think. With wood why not find a light whitish granite that has a wood colour grain.. That way the two compliment. You can further compliment with some wooden chopping boards and a marble piece or two... Cheese board and a pestle and mortar for example.. Both really useful pieces and lovely.. Anthropologie has the pestle and mortar and Habitat a cheese board although I use it for toast and anything that isn't acidic.. :))

Hi Cloughie, A number of my clients have wood with wood and it works well IF you choose the right woods. Since you have your floorboards in situ already I assume their colour is fixed. Whatever it is choose a work surface that contrasts with them, not blends with them. You don't want your work surface to look like your floor. If you have an oak floor choose a really dark work surface or a really light one. I think you will understand my meaning. It’s very shiny isn’t it? You could try porcelain tiles which come in all sorts of styles, for example wood effect, stone effect or patterned. As your kitchen has a classic farmhouse look I think limestone effect porcelain would look amazing. It’s a really tough tile that is easy to maintain - just hoover then mop. Suitable with UFH too. I agree with the others about colour choice. Either white/light grey or concrete for the work surfaces. We used HI-MACS because it's really easy to keep clean. We used a company called Solidity who were quite good.

Beautiful choice of units. Whites or lighter greys could look great against the darker colour.
