How can I make this kitchen look more industrial without making it feel too dark? The room is small and receives little natural light. I like polished brass although I know it doesn't necessarily fit he style I'm going for.

Comments (12)It all comes down to budget as always. The bigger the budge the more you can do. I would be really mindful of the fact, that if you change the facade, it would be better if you could change the windows. The wood cladding I agree would look fabulous, you could have the bottom a lovely grey to tone in. However, neither will look good with bog standard white windows, as both look better with a dark grey, thinner Aluminium Frame or a Chunkier Sandy Beige Frame. When you add white windows, the effect is not quite so slick The pic above shows the white windows with the cladding and it would look a lot better with the darker, thinner frames. If you can't afford to change or colour bond the windows, then maybe go for all over colour, a dark grey would be good, and consider changing the Front door for impact. Alternatively, work towards doing the ultimate change. The vertical wood cladding, with a grey underneath and a door to match the wood. Comments (9)I would find a more interesting, warmer and less stark paint and also paint the radiator in the same colour - whatever colour you choose, you can get an exact match paint suitable for radiators, mixed by someone like Valspar (they do it at B&Q) . I would then get a lovely rug to coordinate with the paint colour and make it more "homely". I'd also get a coloured/patterned/textured roman blind. I'd ditch the yellow stool and replace it with something less dominant and a lot more comfortable. I'd also be reluctant to introduce a bright yellow desk. Do you actually need to two work stations? The desk on the left in combination with that high stool looks extremely uncomfortable and difficult to work at, is it overly high?. Personally, I love the taupe desk, but I can see it is of little practical use in terms of size. I'd be tempted to get rid of it and have some sort of shelving or bookcase on that wall, where you can have photos and accessories, but also to provide somewhere to keep papers, files, post etc. I'm not sure there's room for the mirror as it stands, but if you feel you need to keep it, would it fit on the wall in between the desk on the left and the window wall? If you're keen on introducing that bright yellow into the room, why don't you add it with files/folders, cushions or vases etc? You could even choose it for seat upholstery or as accent colour in the blind or rug. This is a bit of an old photo so we’ve added some raised beds in the area in front of the outbuilding, we’re also going to add in a proper stone sett path next year. We‘re half way through converting part of the building into a chicken coop (we crazy) so we‘re in two minds about whether gravel will be suitable in front of the shed so we will see. I think I plan on recladding the shed with unpainted feather edge boards which will help. I’m also thinking of changing the door and windows to a light colour, perhaps white. Good point about the roofline, it’s rather close to the door so that might look silly. Comments (35)If this is a short term fix, I'd try to find a fabric to tie in those terracotta ties with the off white paint you're using elsewhere and just put a simple roman blind (it doesn't need to work) at the window. Something like this will tie in and has the grey of the floor. We moved last year and I'm sorting out building work - in the meantime I've added nice curtains and blinds and it's meant I don't mind living with it. And I think the open shelves alongside the window will make an enormous difference in taking the eye away from the tiles....See More

- 8 years agoSo the sink and oven position are fixed- no problem.
For me the things that stop this feeling industrial are the suburban elements such as the conventional sink with drainer, the drawer line cabinets, the open display unit, the hanging baskets of flowers and the chimney extractor. In my opinion a little exposed brick isn’t enough to pull this into an industrial look when there is so much conventional stuff.
Personally I think you should be looking to add a chunky sink and taps. Build a chunky chimney to hide an extractor, choose cabinets that are random sizes and avoid having lots of matching cabinets. Consider non matching cabinets for the wall- personally I would go tall.
And as far as decoration I think instead of flowers you should be thinking
Iron furniture or clocks, antique mirror, tarnished brass, weather wood, reclaimed slate, anything vintage, etc, etc.
Your visual doesn’t show lighting /. Consider the best way to do this and think Anglepoise lamps, wall hanging lanterns and oversized ceiling fixtures.
I also think that if you want to go industrial you should cover up the floor and a click together floor or a vinyl are cost effective ways of doing this

PRO8 years agoThe use of lit shelves instead of the wall cabinet would really help. Also consider a copper colour tap and other metallic colours to give the industrial look you are aiming for. The choice of doors really makes a difference. True handle-less or slab doors have a nice clean look (see true handle-less in Ferro weathered below). Also there are many concrete effect worktops available in laminate and quartz, depending on your budget. Apart from that I would suggest lighting, lighting and more lighting. Good luck!
