ideas for what to do with the fire surround, should it stay or Go?
Comments (35)Tricky one, I'm not usually a fan of 1930s fireplaces but this one is better than most. It really depends on the style you are creating in the room, it's never going to look contemporary or cool but it is an original period feature. If I could make it work I would be inclined to keep it but if it was restricting my design choices too much I would get rid of it!...See MoreMixing wood tones (floor/ furniture/ fire surround)?
Comments (10)Very interesting comments Bagpuss, thank you. I guess its not too late to change the furniture order! I would have never thought to use ivory furniture so that's definitely something to think about and I'm all for bringing in more light. I am planning ivory furniture for our living room, hallway and bedroom too (I love ivory furniture), so thought we'd do something different in the dining room. The walls are light too (off white/ nearly ivory) - that's another issue as I'm not sure that colour is suitable or needs to be changed. I actually thought (hoped!) the Mango furniture would create a contrast with the flooring as opposed to a clash and there are some (albeit few) darker tones in the mango furniture that match the flooring so there is a bit of a connection (or so I thought). And it sounds like I'll definitely need to rethink the fireplace altogether!...See MoreTo paint or not to paint Fire surround?
Comments (5)Your room is lovely and I really like the black coffee table and side table. Black always lifts a neutral room. The fireplace surround is nice, but I think it would be better painted white, or for more drama, black. A rug would be nice but I don’t think the room really needs one, and i love a rug!...See MoreRenovate this fire surround or remove?
Comments (10)Hi KP, the Arts & Crafts movement came out as an alternative to the fussy Victorian house decor style, although a lot of Arts & Crafts is quite OTT still. Your fireplace has a bit of both I think! Go with your heart, if you really do not consider it beautiful then so be it. Maybe a complete change of paint colour would be an option? Very dark grey/black can look stunning....See Morehoneypoppet
