Lights and lights

Hi everyone, I am currently undergoing my first renovation and just realised I havent thought about lighting for the kitchen/ bathroom. I wanted to see what people usually go with? It is as simple as just having down lights or are there other things to think about? I am having a velux installed in the kitchen which will help in the summer months but no so much in the winter. Any advice/ tips people can share would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks, Brittany

If you are facing south or west you will get sunlight in through a skylight and you will heat the room with passive solar gain. Artists use to love cool light from the north, so make sure you like this sort of light and be aware you may only occasionally get any sunlight coming in.

I agree that's you need multiple light sources. In my opinion when you are sat on the sofa of an evening you need table lamps to watch Tv and just enough of a glow from the kitchen that you can find the fridge to pour more wine. When you have guests at the dining table I think you need need an overhead decorative pendant or chandelier on a dimmer to set the right mood but you also need to be able to turn it up if you are working from home and using that table. I would only have the spots in the kitchen area- probably 6 or 8 will be plenty. Put them on a dimmer too and then add over cabinet and under cabinet light

Statement lighting or discrete accent lighting - which do you prefer?

Eye catching lighting can really transform a room and create an elevated statement. These work well above dining tables as highlighted by Rocco Borghese, where they can become great conversation starters! Accent lighting is fab for illuminating dark crevices or help you see into the back of shelves which is very handy. It is a very transitional, discrete type of lighting compared to a big statement that may become outdated. Ultimately, it is up to the homeowners needs and desires!

Hi Brittany!

So glad you're asking about this! Lighting is something so underestimated in interior design, and in particular bathrooms. I'm a bathroom designer for Bathroom Eleven so perhaps I can offer some tips!

Firstly, my design colleague Johanna wrote a great blog on this on our website - https://bathroomeleven.co.uk/bathroom-lighting-how-to-get-it-right/ - so give that a little peek!

Secondly, as a general rule, I always factor in two things for Bathroom Lighting - Task and Mood lighting. Ceiling LEDs give a great, bright, broad lighting cover for your bathroom meaning its perfect for practical day to day uses.

However, at the end of the day, when you're wanting to relax - or for those midnight trips to the loo! - it's really nice to factor in some softer lighting. Under vanity unit LED's, soft wall lights, plinth lights, illuminating recess, or mirrors - all these things offer you that secondary lighting option that can really lift your bathroom!

Hi Brittany,

Our lighting designers tend to use downlights as general lighting around kitchens as you can position them in all the major places you may be working at. Pendants are a popular choice to hang above a kitchen island and Linear Profile looks great under cupboards.
