Statement lighting or discrete accent lighting - which do you prefer?

Statement lighting can be a great way of adding character to your kitchen. A bold chandelier, multi-level island lights and bold pendant lights are just some of the many statement features you could choose from.

Or, alternatively, with the development of modern kitchen designs we have seen and influx of individuals opting for hidden accent lighting features. Accent lighting can be installed in the midst of shelving, in cupboards or in niches. They offer a soft, sleek alternative to larger statement lighting fixtures.

Accent lighting is understated and serene and will (I presume) not date as quickly...!

I disagree. I think that striplight effect that seems to pop up everywhere is dated and certainly not to everyone's taste.

Craig, your question on Lighting Control. The rise of LED has brought new dimension to the lighting control debate. Lighting Control Systems such as Lutron are the best way to dim LED. We use Lighting Control Systems with 0-10v, DALI and DMX dimming and it's possible to get very smooth dimming to really low levels. I don't really want to suggest one system over another. I'm sure they all have their strengths. Rako offers wireless flexibility for retrofit applications, Lutron has a superb heritage and history of fantastic reliability. I'd look for dealers who are really experienced in using the system and a manufacturer with a strong local support infrastructure. Help making a fireplace a statement!

Lovely fireplace - but I think that the reason it seems out of kilter is the difference in size between the fire and the chimney. How about making the chimney breast the same width as the fireplace by simple boarding, and then make a feature out of this beautiful fire by painting the whole of the fire and the chimney in a bold colour. If you have another colour in the room to pick up this colour, use that - otherwise try plum colour, and co-ordinate with same colour cushions to add to your blue chair/settee. I also think there are too many small bits and bobs on the hearth and the shelf. Clear most of these and use one large, tall statement piece one side on the hearth - say a very tall silver vase or tall silver ornament. At the moment all the things you have are the same colour, and I feel that it needs more texture and height, but keep it simple. Hope this is of help.

For the client... i need to house the boiler/pump/rcd unit in a cupboard somewhere and he wants all the floor space he can, plus i am trying to increase the light & vision that will be seen as one enters the hallway front the front door angle. If I square off the wall it will enclose the hallway, eat floor space, reduce light to hallways & makes the boiler cupboard & ensuite too big. I also have an upright piano to place, & i have made the entrance hall into an open library. The island has space for 3 bar stools, plus the client likes to entertain... so I need the separate dining table.

I'm not sure about either to be honest, sorry. I appreciate the ideas though! I think where i'm struggling is i quite like something gold/marble, i'm just aware I have gone for quite statement pieces so I want everything to effortlessly flow together and look well-styled but not gaudy/mish-mashed. I suppose I know how i want it to feel i.e. luxurious, elegant and feminine rather than how i want it to look, if that makes sense? I would always suggest a statement piece such as this! our Globbi Chromati is a very modern design and can be made in many different variations and sizes .

Eye catching lighting can really transform a room and create an elevated statement. These work well above dining tables as highlighted by Rocco Borghese, where they can become great conversation starters!

Accent lighting is fab for illuminating dark crevices or help you see into the back of shelves which is very handy. It is a very transitional, discrete type of lighting compared to a big statement that may become outdated.

Ultimately, it is up to the homeowners needs and desires!
