Drop ceiling or giving?

I have a living room which has a hexagon shaped low ceiling. I want to create a ceiling feature with led strip lighting but not sure whether to partially drop the ceiling right above the seating area and add led in between or add coving to an odd shaped ceiling to incorporate the LED. Worried both ideas will make the room look smaller but have really fallen in love with the idea of highlighting different parts of the room (living area and dining area) by using lights and different features on the ceiling.
