Bungalow Extension Drop in Ceiling

Hello, we are currently looking at a single storey extension to our semi detached 1930s bungalow to give us an open plan family area, dining and kitchen. This will involve opening up our existing kitchen and family room at the back of the house and extending out. We are expecting to go to planning for this.
The initial plans show the ceiling height of the extension dropping from 2445mm to 2100mm and it's been suggested we just need to accept this. The existing ceilings are 2900mm. This seems a big drop in ceiling height and doesn't really create that open flow of the rooms or open us up to the garden. Is this really our only option?
