Need advice on updating external wall for an office space
Comments (2)I would not render or put any cladding up just spruce up what is there. I would paint the stone coins and window ledges so that they look pristine then unify the window frames by painting all the same colour. I would paint the lower ones white as I think white looks smarter against red brick. I would paint the wood door- again a lighter colour looks smart against red brick although this can soon look dirty in an urban area- perhaps a taupe/ grey would be forgiving. Lastly I would put expensive looking chrome door furniture on the entrance with a modern sign at eye level....See MoreHome Office Help! 3 doors, one window, where can things go?
Comments (2)Sorry for taking so long to reply! I tried moving the desk in front of the window, but unfortunately it did not work - it had a very 'stuck in the middle of the room' feel, and also blocked most of the natural light. The only window is quite low, and the walls are over a foot thick (and I'm on the side of the valley so don't get direct sun in the room very often!). I just can't find a layout that 'works' without blocking something 😔...See MoreCan shifting one of the supporting walls be dangerous?
Comments (8)When my parents had the family home extended back in the mid-90’s, we had the additional steel lintel’s installed as part of the alteration, seemed common practice and a regular activity for buildings having an extension where the walls were being removed (our extension was similar to yours in that it was the external wall which was removed). The builder used exactly what is shown in Sonia’s post, one thing to be aware of though is that you are likely to have remnants from the original structure and where the lintel has been boxed in on show in the room (see example below) this might not be the case with modern building techniques but thats something you can discuss with the builder....See MoreWhich wall would you mount the TV on?
Comments (27)Hi Lola, thanks for adding this comment. I'm highly inclined to agree with you but the thing that's annoying me is that right side wall with the clock on it. That's a solid brick wall. I love the idea of having that new fake wall built with sunk in niches/compartments on the left, top, bottom and TV in the middle. But the right side is going to look strange as there no symmetry with the left side AND I can't cut into the right side brick wall ....or....can I? I want the whole wall to be flush with niches but want that symmetry with top, bottom , right and left. Any ideas how I can achieve that? As I think out loud, I could ignore niches on the left as I can't do anything on the right and simply put niches on over and below the TV. This way you have symmetry on all 4 sides. So in summary: Above TV sunk in niched compartments Below TV sunk in niched compartments Left side of TV blank OR pictures hung on them? Right side of TV blank OR pictures hung on them? TV sunk in the middle. I'm not sure I like the blanked sides or hung pictures. With pictures you would have items protuding on the right/left sides whereas all other sides including the TV will be sunk in. Confusing on the eye? Any other ideas on how I might be able to combat this?...See MoreMoop
