Thanks Emily. That was actually my original plan but I really struggled to find the right tray and I also wasn't sure if that would be enough to break up the furniture show room look. I havent looked for a tray since last year though so I will have a look and see if I can find anything now.

I don't see any issue with the footstool to be honest, it looks good. The issue I see is the back wall, it looks a bit imposing. Something like a huge mirror (almost to the floor) to the right of the sideboard, and a cluster of pictures about it may help. Also, repeating colours creates interest, so even a bit of the dull yellow on that wall would help. A standard lamp in the corner would look lovely and provide interest, the plant is disappearing a bit!

Hi Jones1987, it's all about the tone. If you squint at your image there is no plant! It would be better against a light wall. I think something saturated (how strong the colour is) or light in tone is what is needed.

There is the most fabulous gallery in Eastbourne called Emma Mason prints. She specialises in 20th century original prints from leading British printmakers. Everything is original, hand printed and a bit of history. Have a look at their website. Also, St. Judes prints is worth a look and this weekend is the Cambridge original print fair with hundreds of lovely things on show. I always buy original art, it's an investment and often less than you might imagine.

I think it just has that furniture showroom feel as you don't have any accessories in the seating space as your room is lovely.. I agree add a tray and accessorise it. I think 1 or 2 more cushions would help and maybe a small throw over the chaise. Even just adding a brass floor lamp in that corner helps. in the future I might also add a side table between the sofa and chair and add a tall table lamp . Excuse the style in the photos btw
