There are many tricks to help give the illusion of more space in your kitchen:

1) Using lighter colours. This doesn’t have to be white – pale grey also works well, and it doesn’t have to be the whole room. A lighter coloured flooring or a light work surface will give this effect.

2) Reflective materials. By choosing a mirrored or high gloss splashback, you will create depth in the room and the possibility of making the room appear twice as big.

3) Don’t overcrowd it. Well-designed kitchens will make the best use of space when positioning units. Use clever storage solutions so you won’t need to fill the room with cupboards.

4) Light it up. A well-lit room will draw you in whereas a dimly lit one will automatically seem smaller. Make sure you get in as much natural light as possible too.

5) Less clutter. Keep accessories to a minimum if trying to maximise worktop space, and only have the essentials on show. A clear work surface area will make your kitchen look more spacious.

Hi there, A friend did just that - has quite a large utility and a neater kitchen. The utility seems to have become the dumping ground for everything - laundry, rubbish re-cycling, bulk buys, vegetables, a lot of equipment storage ( a halogen oven, electric wok, spare dishwasher, two ironing boards and a suit press, surplus crockery and cutlery, cleaning materials and equipment , baking tins, deep fat fryer, sports gear, pet food, etc....) It is cluttered and not functioning as she had planned. I would start with a list of what I need on a weekly basis; it would be very handy to have those items in the actual kitchen. I found a larder press to be invaluable, as well as a large fridge/freezer. If you bake weekly, keep the most used baking stuff in the kitchen. For example, I decided to stop making cup-cakes and focus on tray-bakes instead because that way I only needed one tray, no cup cake cases etc. I have limited space so simplifying worked for me. Shelve out the garage, and keep stuff used only occasionally out there. Personally, I got rid of all that surplus stuff and simply decided to manage without - but it could easily be stored in the garage. If you are unsure about stuff, pack it in boxes, label it, and put a "get rid of date" on the box ( you can always revise that later if you feel you need it) Then store it in the garage. I find less is definitely more for me anyway...for example, my Magimix sits on my worktop and is used almost every day. Anything it can't do I simply don't do! I do find though that having a sink in my utility room works wonder, keeps the kitchen much neater - I wash dirty boots, veg, etc out there and it definitely helps.

Moving the bathroom upstairs is always a great move, as it's far more saleable afterwards as this is what the majority of people would prefer. Also to remove the bathroom and knock through from the kitchen is standard practice in what i presume was a two up two down Victorian property?? Making the bathroom a utility i personally think is a waste of space. Most would choose to simply remove the wall and knock through, then use the whole of the space for the kitchen to include your washing machine / washer dryer - to use the space as just a utility is not making the best of the space available and you don't have enough space to play with. Having a downstairs loo in a 'wee' house ( excuse the pun ) is not a necessity it's just using space you could put to better use. You can then extend at a later date and possibly then put back a downstairs loo. Lots of people would have a galley kitchen with patio doors at the end to give you a view on to the garden. Do you have a plan of the layout? Here's a typical example of such a layout.

Difficult to say in the absence of pics or plans but here are some ideas. Buy smaller pieces of furniture - eg sofa with thin arms not chunky ones. 2-seater not 3-seater. For furniture not used frequently, consider folding versions - eg folding dining chairs you can keep under the bed and only bring out when you have guests. Declutter ruthlessly. Keep everything very tidy - good storage, a place for everything. Use mirrors to add the illusion of space. Paint the whole place the same colour, including woodwork. Keep to a limited palette of colours and materials. But use texture (eg rugs, cushions, bedlinen) to keep it feeling cosy, not sterile. There are lots of articles on Houzz and other sites like Apartment Therapy, with ideas about coping with a small kitchen - eg plate drying rack which folds down from the wall. Post pics/floor plan if you want more specific ideas for your apartment.

If this house was empty and needing everything doing there would be an argument for reconfiguring it and moving the stairs. Any changes now are going to be so disruptive that I doubt the upheaval and expense is worth it. Perhaps you should just intend to plan to move soon rather than later.
