lighting a dining kitchen

Hi,

We are renovating an old farmhouse and have decided to have a kitchen predominately lit by recessed lighting except over one work surface which splits the room into two. It’s not an island.
The worktop will be somewhere to sit as we wanted a social kitchen and I would like 3 coloured glass pendant lights over it (not sure of colour yet but possibly smokey or blue) Opposite we have a “breakfast nook” and I want 1 pendant light above it. I quite like the ones you pull down just on a purely practical basis. I like industrial style but I’m unsure of what to put with glass pendants. I don’t want a mish mash obviously so they need to compliment. When looking it is very hard to see what works as either pictures have the same lights over both places or pictures don’t give you a good enough view of the lighting in both areas

So, basically you are looking for ideas for pendant lights that will go together: glass pendants for peninsula and a pendant (industrial style) for the dining area. Yes?

That made me smile and is so true OnePlan. Personally I always go for a kitchen diner for the same reasons as Jaimie but also because the sense of space is so much more relaxing to work in as well. Choose a good classic design and colour for the kitchen units so that you can zone the dining area in complimentary colour if you want to.

Hi we have just had a similar extension off our kitchen diner, our RSJ spanned across the original back wall, we had 8 warm white LED dimable down lighters. Have attached a few pics. Have yet to decide on kitchen lighting.

If you have a good lighting shop you could draw up a plan and take it to the shop for advice. Check out this article about kitchen lighting. I followed this advice and it gave me a completey different lighting plan that I would not have planned. I actually have light where I need it and not because it's part of a grid on the ceiling. Even the adviser at my local electrical shop liked it and advised me to remove 2 of the ceiling lights - I think my double spots are spaced 1.4m apart. You also need to think about task lighting for areas where you will be working and need sharper/brighter lighting. All of the info is in the link below. I think that direct light over food is unappealing and your dining room will have a nicer ambiance if you have different lighting sources as well as the overhead fibre optics. You could put table lamps on a sideboard, a light behind a plant in the corner casting shadows up the wall, a standard lamp or you could put spots in the floor or get a wall washer. If you like your lights to twinkle you could also make a feature with fairy lights in an oversized vase.
