Help with small bathroom please

Hi, we are having a complete bathroom overhaul and it's quite a small room in an old house. We are pretty limited as the doorway is wide (900mm) and on the wall opposite the door there is a large sash window which is low (640mm above the floor). The loo is just to the right of the door and we don't think the soil pipe can be moved so it has to stay there. The room is approx 2580x 2120 and isn't completely square so we have a challenge.

Ideally we'd like a separate bath and shower but that could be squeezing too much in. My other half really dislikes over bath showers - he hates that water splashes everywhere and they often feel cramped. We've looked at 800 quadrant showers but they feel pretty small. We're happy to have a shorter length bath if needed. We know there have to compromises but we're going round in circles!

Has anyone seen any really good over bath showers with good amount of foot space while standing in the shower, screens that keep most of the splashes in and preferably taps in the middle of the bath? Or is there something completely different we could do? A lot to ask I know and we'd be very grateful for any ideas.

Thanks for sending the images over and the dimensions. A separate shower and bath both fit, i have included a 1600w bath (slightly shorter than standard) the shower is an offset quad at 800x1000mm and i suggest putting the towel rail to the left of the basin. Slightly restricted as to where things can go because of the window and relocating the toilet but the layout works.

Hi,

Have you got any images of your bathroom and then i can have a better look at the layout? There are lots of options of baths and screens to help contain the water. If you can send some images over that would be great and then i can have a look.

It would be helpful to know if the door is in the corner but if it is this may well be possible.

I agree with an entirely tiled room. You might take a pic facing the sink and toilet side (I think the one shot makes the size deceptive) The decor of the rest of the house, or the planned decor, will help you decide on the tile or tile family (you can use different sizes or run patterns to add interest) Off white can be striking, and likely work with anything But you can also go with very light cement colored greys or other neutrals on very light tones... I do recommend coming up with a design plan for the entire home first (even if it is not all renovated at once). Many people go room by room and later on the home itself can feel disjointed. Try to look to the style of the house as well. Do you have other pics of the house? You'll want it to relate well to the rest of the house. :)

Hi guys, I am back again with a bathroom query, I have an image attached. I really don't like the current layout for this bathroom and I'm thinking if we move the toilet to the wall on the left under the sink and put the bathroom vanity where the toilet currently is so that this is the first thing the person sees when the door is open. Do you think this works? Again advice is hugely appreciated. I honestly had no idea finalising bathrooms would be so difficult, and the support I have received on Houzz has been the best of any professional I have met so far so thank you all! Hi Sarah, As you can see a square shower tray is going to work to much better than a rectangle shower tray. It is going to allow you much more space and open up the room. I would suggest keeping the base of the room light (tiles and paint), and then go ahead and incorporate darker shades. On the wall, where the sink sits, add a large mirror to enhance the space in the room, this is a simple and easy way to trick the eye into thinking a room is bigger than it is. A wall hung toilet and skin cabinet is going to increase the floor space of the room. From a decorative side of things I would recommend black framed glass around the shower, this is a substile dark colour introduction without over doing it, and the glass will still keep the room open. Thank you both. Here are some photos - prepare yourself for grim! We've just ripped out the old airing cupboard as the boiler has been relocated so that is useful space. It may be that we're trying to squeeze too much into a small space. I've included a (not to scale) diagram which may help. Thank you again.

It is very unusual for a WC soil pipe to go straight down. Most likely it travels to one of the locations marked , where the soil stack will likely be. Which means you might have a false wall behind the wc, there may be a few cm that can be gained in this room and likely you can move the wc a little.
Look outside for the soil stack to work out what you need to be near.

Thanks Bubbles, that looks great. I didn't realise there were offset quads so that could work really well. We've drawn this out on the floor so this could work. Need to work out where to put the loo roll as it's rather tight!

Thanks Jonathan, this is a very unusual house with lots of quirks and challenges! The soil pipe runs from the bathroom into the middle of the house and then down. It already has a few turns in it so we are reluctant to add more. The builder is coming tomorrow so we can discuss more options then.

It sounds like that toilet has been moved since the soil pipe has a lot of bends in it. Consider where it needs to end up (ie where the soil stack and drain are) and therefore what route the soil pipe could take- this will tell you where you can place the wc rather than adding further pipe to to the existing route

Hiya - I think Bubbles bathrooms and tiles has the right idea there but I do have another idea! Funny position of soilpipe in this one!! I have an idea but may need a bespoke shower! I'll draw it up for you. What's your budget both install and product?

I've just put in a back to wall victorian style bath which is lovely and the shower in the middle has everything on one piece so there are no taps at all at the bath level (see image of the one we bought). We've also used pocket doors in the past and on one occasion we used a sink above a toilet (when they are built in to the top of the cistern). I was also told recently I couldn't move a toilet but then found a way using a different type of toilet (can't remember what it was called) that enabled them to move it

Thanks for the measurements

Drew this up as a little option. Bringing a 900 x 800 squared shower along the bath, sharing the walking space with the toilet and basin on the opposite walls. Nice natural room and you should be able to move toilet as you're only creating 1 bend with a small distance. Doesn't have to be fitted furniture but it hides the SP.

Hi Desiign, thank you so much for taking the trouble to pull this together, I really appreciate it. Ideally we would leave the window clear as I'd like to keep easy access to that. I really like your idea of the partially built in shower and we could think about that in another part of the room.

Budget wise, we're not so sure at the moment until we can an idea of the building costs. It won't be huge as we have a whole house to renovate so won't be going for any particularly expensive design options.

There's more work to be done in my option so I would go with the layout in Bubbles option - just wanted to go my perfect bathroom layout. I like building new walls out in older properties so I know what's there!

If you want the toilet in the corner as another comment suggested and you weren't concealing the cistern you would need an 'open back close coupled toilet' rather than a 'fully shrouded close coupled toilet' :) If going traditional and trying to keep budget down - look at Burlington for sanitaryware and Utopia for furniture - sold all over UK :)

Nessaj have you thought about the style, an overall look, of your new bathroom? From our experience that impacts the design very much. For example, if you’d like to have a more traditional, victorian style, than a big freestanding slipper bath would be the focal point and everything else would have to be designed around it. And on the other hand, if you like a more contemporary feel, then a big wet room enclosure form wall to wall would be the main feature. And all of that dictates the arrangement on the floorplan.
