Patio style/size ideas

Hello all

Currently planning new patio and path on extension. Want to leave has much grass and the huge boarders and trees I have too.

Need a path that wraps around the house.

The blue house sign points north.

The shadows you can see are not there when the sun is high in summer

The yellow is my expert drawing of extension pitched roof is 7m wide - other is just over 11m

The red circle is where I need to fill with trees/greenery as a gap from my beautiful old tree.

Would like patio area at top by pitched roof (kitchen extension) - possible with a pergola of some type (I crave lanterns and little lights at night) if we were going straight across would be 70-80square metres which is too much plus paths plus I want to see grass wherever I’m looking out from kitchen

Possible a little corner wooden day house next to the blue house sign is or something (my dads also made me a stainless steel sculpture for there )

The ideal place for your terrace would be the top corner just under your blue house. A good design would make a nice link and journey to the terrace. As for size, you need to decide what you want on the terrace. If just for eating allow enough space around the table and chairs so that people can walk around comfortably when people are seated without falling in to the plants.

That bit bigger is always better. If you want some loungers as well, try interlocking two large squares of paving with a different paving material to the edges to add a bit of interest.

When you're creating a patio area - you'll be surprised at the options that are available!

There are so many different colours and styles of patio's you can create that you might not be too disappointed to see it when you're looking out from the kitchen.

Hi, This looks like such a wonderful place to work from. How will work ever be done? I have a small post on my site on mobile offices: http://www.kalabas-interiors.com/mobile-office/ It might give you alternatives. Also have you considered a container? These can be easy to start with and you can clad the outside and give it a cabin feeling. Depending on the size you choose you might end up with a generous working space. Also a tipi like building made of wood or cladded in wood. With a view like that consider glass, creating an as wide as possible view. My last suggestion is http://hivehaus.co.uk They were shown on George Clarks, Amazing spaces and it looked really good. The idea of this modular space is that you can just 'slip' in additional space as and when needed. i think the most important thing is to work out first of all how you would like to use the garden space, whether its to relax in, socialize in, kids/grandkids to play in, to enjoy from the house and or different focal points within the garden, is there an area that gets say evening sun and that's the time you both get home and want to enjoy a meal/drink in the evening sun? do you need storage areas? outside cooking area? how much time do you have to spend upkeeping it? (and be honest! too many people aren't believe me lol), how much money you have to spend, both on landscaping and maintenance, once you really know what you want from it, have a search though houzz at the different styles of gardens and start getting an idea of what you like and come up with a board with clippets of different styles, doesn't matter if it takes time, best to get the basic's right before spending any money before planting, its worth getting the soil tested for its type, ph and nutrient level, this will also help work out what plants you will be able to grow sorry I haven't helped with styles or direct ideas, I feel its your own space and to get the best from it you need to understand more what you require from it and what you can give to get out of it most of all good luck and enjoy turning the lovely space into a garden that you can enjoy

Hi Heather, Porcelain would definitely be a good option for outdoor use as it offers a level of slip resistance that you were concerned was lacking with polished concrete. Carolina, I'm not sure our building regs people really knew about the rules for horizontal wires either but in the end they said they could be climbed like a ladder and wouldn't permit them. Annoying when I've seen photos of them used in lots of places, including commercial buildings & bordering much higher drops than we needed.
