POLL: Exposed brick - yay or nay?
Comments (32)I agree with Rennew Traditional Building Materials - it's not a question of what's 'trending' or 'passé', but of really paying attention to the existing building and marrying that with the sensibility of the future inhabitant. Some spaces suit the industrial treatment, some don't, and no-one should be forced to be fashionable. I can't help thinking of the old Bauhaus principle of 'truth to materials' though. If you find yourself faking an 'authentically exposed' surface, then something isn't quite clicking in your analysis of what's in front of your nose. Not that I wasn't once taken in by an entirely ersatz 'industrial' café in Paris once, which was not, as I'd supposed, a converted butchers! The convincingly-aged metro tiles were to die for......See MoreKitchen - the finishing touch
Comments (53)I think the pale grey tile is too cold. For some reason I just don't like it and think it tips the room into something not as funky looking. I'd go for a small muted (very pale greys) tile laid in a herringbone/chevron pattern, or plain white metro tiles with grey grout. I'm not a fan of grey grout and white metro tiles generally, but I think they would look absolutely great in this room!...See MoreBrick wall and false chimmney help...!!!!
Comments (3)Thank-you very much for your advice Alisa, apologies I don't have images at the moment, will try to upload as soon as I can... However if you are in the UK, the kitchen units are Habitat Olivia beech freestanding ,to give you an idea of colour? Rethinking, I now think that because I am having a chinmney hood with wall units each side, and I would probably like a tiled splashback behind my freestanding units, it may not be worth keeping the bricks?, I can get sockets colourmatched to the bricks but then my handmade Mexican colourful tiles don't go shape or colour wise against the bricks..... We have four children, so I'm thinking easy clean splashback areas might be wiser in the long term rather than keeping a few small areas of non cleanable bare brick around wall units and then tiling behind the range cooker? I did wonder about toughened glass but if so then no colourful tiles. It seems to be either keep the bricks, see bits of them but not be able to clean them or have colourful tiles, or render and tiles but lose the bricks! If I had no wall cupboards I'd see more brick arguably, but then we need plenty of storage! What do you all think please? thanks everyone!!...See MoreKitchen Splashback
Comments (9)Have you actually got room between the Aga and the wall to fit a splashback? I don't know if it applies to all Agas but the top needs to be able to come off if the thermostat fails on an oil fired Aga. Pretty sure they tell you to leave room to get it off for other models too, certainly for electric which we're having installed in a new property. And yes the thermostat can fail, that's how we know. We tiled down tightly to our current one and then the thermostat failed after a few years. It was only because my daughter was able to use her slender fingers to feed the cable through that the Aga engineer was able to do the job without dismantling our stone tiles. It was Christmas Eve too......See MoreTani H-S
