What to do with this fireplace?
Hi! I’ve just bought my first buy to let. Today we discovered this old fireplace. Its in the living room but not central on the wall. (Think the room may have previously been two). Any suggestions on some creative things to do with it bearing in mind I need to keep costs down as it’s only a rental. Or would you just cover it up? Also I think it’s a bit awkward as it’s not ground level it’s slightly raised. Any ideas? Thanks!

I think either fill with logs, or put candles in it. I just think it’s a Little awkward as it’s not floor level

Comments (6)Many thanks for your suggestions. I will see if I can get a mantle to wrap around the current bricks. We may have to remove some of the bricks on the side to fit the mantle. I am not sure about having just a shelve above... I prefer to have the legs :) For the blue bricks, see below the inspiration I had. Comments (0)We are refurbishing a utility room in an early Victorian terrace. There is currently a fireplace which has an old cast iron oven built in (which is cracked and collects dust). The question is do we keep this and try to clean it up or are there any alternative ideas as to what we can do that utilises the space in a better way rather than a just an ornamental feature? Comments (17)It’s a lovely room so I don’t think it needs much faffing about with. I wonder also about painting the chimney breast, and arches if you wish, in a green. F&B Pigeon or Mizzle are lovely, but I think Dulux Overtly Olive may sit better with your throw and cushions. Comments (7)What era is it? My friend inherited a similar fire surround in her 1980s fake Tudor house. She has managed to remove some of the airy fairy mouldings and then painted it in F&B Bone. Luckily her hearth is a nice piece of marble. You could remove your funny hearth tiles and add a nice piece of marble or other stone maybe. I like the insert which has a Victorian vibe. If you really hate the surround then get a replacement. There are loads for sale online and even places like B&Q now sell pine surrounds which you can paint as you wish. Or paint it as already suggested which will probably be the cheapest option....See More
