Comments (8)Agree with going for the pocket doors. You may likely have to build out the wall so the pockets have something to recess into, otherwise you could go for Japanese style sliding doors that slide along the face of the wall. I personally don't think you have the space for that large a dining table, it's too wide. As others as suggested I'd replace with a extendable table. I've done 2 layouts, option 1 with your 1m wide table, option 2 with a 80cm wide table and a bench. It doesn't quite meet the 1m clearance rule but it gives you more wiggle room. I hadn’t considered painting the table and chairs. They’ve been handed down to us from my partners parents and still in great condition!
I’m not sure which color to paint them. Our living room has a dark wooden coffer, steel/charcoal tv stand (which may not be very visible in my pictures). Should I paint it a dark brown to resemble the wooden coffer?
And no, it’s a new build. Next door to a church.

PRO7 years agoThat little table looks very cottagey attractive as it is and the chairs go well. I can imagine you would like to have something more modern for a new apartment. The colouring below would work well in your room and if the table is not too large (as this one is) it could be pushed against a wall for most of the time. It is difficult to tell what happens in the room.
In the future you might have a larger dining area where you can have a modern table, but that little round table will always find a place; maybe displaying family photographs; a base for a lamp and large bowl of flowers; maybe in a bedroom for displays or having a decorative, or heavy linen to-the-floor tablecloth with jute trim. If you paint it, don't make it brown, as it will look like an apology. You could pluck out the deep red lacquer from your rug, or go with a mid-to-deep French grey-blue.

7 years agoI agree circular. I love your table, it looks solid and sturdy. The chairs are maybe a little too cottagey for your room, so you could leave the table natural or paint it leaving the top as it is, or change everything for something more modern. A few pics below. Painting furniture isn’t difficult but a bit time consuming. Prep is everything - sand all over to key the paint, wash down, then paint two coats of primer followed by two top coats. Buy the best paint you can as it will last longer. In the second pic they have a similar table to yours with more modern chairs. The bottom pic is marble with vintage chairs.
