How to use living room space
Hi all.
In the process of buying a house in which I'm not use how to use the space in the living room. It's a small room with two doorways and a very shallow decorative "chimney breast". Current owners have the sofa on the side without the chimney breast but it's only big enough for a 2 seater. I'm torn between making a feature of the chimney breast and deepening it and building shelves either side or trying to knock it out and have the sofa against that wall? Its only maybe a brick deep. Room is 12'11 by 11'5

Comments (17)I’m no good at drawing floorplans but womdered if this would work: - Keep the island but turn it 90 degrees to face the garden. You will probably need to drop to 2 bar stools - Shorten the kitchen run with the sink and hob on it. One of those may need to go on the island - Dining table goes in front of the doors to the garden, parallel to the island and to the doors - then in the space in between your island and your dining table, basically under the big steel, you put a small sofa on the kitchen side of the room and a tv on the opposite wall. Comments (6)It's a lovely room. Are you buying new furniture or trying to make your existing furniture work because an L shaped sofa might work well in the space and allow for two separate zones. If it was me then I wouldn't continue the kitchen back along that wall and instead create more of a galley kitchen with an island facing towards the back and a bank of full height units against the wall. This would make the rest of the room more useable by keeping the kitchen more compact and with as much storage as you need. In open plan spaces like that I find that one of the things that people find most difficult is deciding where to put the TV! I've had a lot of people come to me after they've had that kind of open plan design, but it doesn't really work for what they want to use it for. PRO7 years agoi like the idea of having a fireplace in a living room it creates a nice atmosphere. i think you could make the door on the left wall bigger (i assume it goes to ta dining or kitchen room?), it would make the space feel airy and will create a point of interest, it would also bring more light into the room. I'd close the closet from the living room, you might be able to use it from the hallway. then you would have a good space for a larges sectional sofa and a chair near the window.
