Planter advice !

Hi.
I’ve bought this planter but not sure what to put in it. Garage is quite ugly so I’d like the plants to provide some coverage. Not sure whether to plant some bamboo, some trees or something like hydrangeas which are in my other planter (see pic)
Any suggestions?

I would probably avoid any large variety of shrubs in a planter that size as they would starve themselves of nutrients in no time at all and start to look sick. Trellis on the wall and a nice climber, aspect important as to which type and then plant up the rest with ferns as above, or perennials again depends on aspect to what will grow well.

How much sunlight is there and which way does that wall of the garage face ie west, east?

Although it may not be the first idea that comes to mind when facing foxes, a cheap solution is to get a man to urinate around the perimeter. This sounds odd and a little foul, but because foxes have good noses (like dogs) and are territorial (like wolves) they will smell it and understand it as the area belonging to a different pack and avoid your garden. Don't let this stop you from getting those planters you mentioned though! They sounded stylish, and the white will bounce more light around a city garden.

Roof terrace advice needed!

We're in the middle of our roof terrace project. It gets the sun all day so we really need some shade up there when it's all finished. I would appreciate any ideas for this as I'm a bit lost and my husband and I can't agree on what to do at the moment! I'd like something which won't take up much space as we will have planters, built in benches and a bar/BBQ area already up there. Appreciate any advice! Thanks.

Gerty, you're right. I wouldn't have "broken china" in the reach of kids...or pets! Sam, I took that photo at a flower festival. Yes, the colours of the flowers match the crockery beautifully. Apparently, it’s really easy to create - you simply put a pot upside down on a soft surface like grass, hit it gently with a hammer or mallet covered with a thick piece of cloth, then reassemble the broken pieces as you wish. Me again:) I’m no expert but have a few ideas. Unsure what aspect your planter is facing, wether it’s in sun or shade. Bamboo would work well just be sure to research the variety. Any of the Sasa (broad leaved bamboo) will grow tall, but be aware that these spread like mad via underground roots so I’d add a weed proof membrane to the base of planter and after a few years they might not look so great in a container. Chimonobambusa Marmorea (marbled bamboo would be a good choice if it’s in shade. Besides bamboo there are a few shrubs and that can do well in containers, Camelias can do well if in shade, Daphne would be lovely if it gets some sun and smells divine. Laurel will pretty much thrive anywhere and you can prune it to whatever shape you like. Trees I’m unsure on but I think so long as they’re grown on dwarf rootstock they might be ok but I’d rather see a larger container. Thuja Occidentalis will do well if you want a wall of green as would yew but it’s slow growing. Ferns can look great if in shade, Polystichum Setiferum (soft shield fern) or Mattecuia (ostrich/shuttlecock fern) can grow fairly tall. Can’t think of any more atm but I’m sure there are many more. What I would do however is treat the planter to some wood preservative or other chosen treatment and line the inside with plastic (remember to put drainage holes in), this will help stop the wood from rotting.

Really like that planter. I agree best to use a preservative on it, natural or a colour you like, inside and out. It will last longer that way. The planter is too small for any trees, but small shrubs or grasses would look nice, with a few summer bedding for colour such as pelargoniums or petunias. If it’s sunny you could try patio roses or a Cistus or Lavender. A nice tall grass is Miscanthus. Smaller shrubs are Eunumous, Hydrangeas and Skimmia.
