Unless you want your home to be a museum it might be a case of choosing a few favourite pieces and then letting the rest go. It's hard because there is always a bit of your heritage in each piece but remember every antique piece of furniture carries a story - a bit of history. We all treasure that. You might be able to find a lovely home for some of your grandfather's pieces. For the pieces you don't like or have no value.... you know what I'm going to say.... Some people take photographs of the treasured items, or why not a video? I painted a bargain dark wood table Fired Earth 'Flake White' to match my walls and it is gorgeous but I think you could get away with brilliant white to match your fireplace (I agree that you need to limit the colours / textures in the room for harmony), Before that (image below) it was a Farrow and Ball 'Nearly Black' (I think!). Also gorgeous. If your table is varnished you can sand and paint but if it is waxed (run your finger nail down it in a hidden place to see if wax comes off) then you may have a bit more of a struggle as the wax will repell the paint. I would also suggest covering your chairs with something yummy too or changing them for something less heavy. Comments (25)Ikea have a headboard which you can fit behind your own bed and eliminate the bedside units gaining more space for nightstand use and quilt storage underneath. It will give you some more privacy from the window too. Eventually a roman blind would be more appropriate too. The remaining wall at the side of the window can be used for hanging shelving like the ikea kallax. Open the space visually by simply adding a larger mirror to a side wall and hang hats scarves and even coats on pegs along the opposite wall. Use the space above the entryway door for shelving or closed cupboards and fit in a corner wardrobe. If you can remove the door or get it to swing outward. If you consider changing the bed for an underbed storage one it must have a hydraulic mechanism otherwise it is a nightmare. But you can find some storage bags or boxes that slide under the existing bed - just measure properly and try to make the best of the space. Alternatively you could change the bed completely to a high up loft base with a ladder and have ample space beneath it. Check the ikea Stora and others too....See MoreAwkward wardrobe/closet space.
Comments (1)I would put a filing cabinet style unit facing into the space. You can then either fill it with things for the office - desk space or clothes if required. It would work because it is easier to access by pulling the usable space forward in the form of drawers rather than having to lean into the space. Carolina, the table isn't the best looking so I would rather hide it under a table cloth!
Plus, I've got this fabric to make padded place mats that matches cushion covers I've made:-
If I have any left over though, I am considering making a table runner with it. The table cloth will be a bright lime green.
