What do you think? Paper chimney breast or back wall?
I've chosen the wall paper below (Harlequin Arccos in Ochre/ Steel) and cant decide whether to paper the chimney breast or the back wall with the sofa along it.. What are your thoughts? see pics below
The paper is more muted than appears in the photos.
I think the rest of the room is going to be a blue, possibly F&B's Hague Blue (not shown in the pictures) but i need to get a tester pot. I've tried a few colours and i keep returning to blue. Any thoughts on what colour I should use as an accent for lampshades etc?
Its our spare room for chilling out in the winter so i'm trying to create a cosy snug feel.

to wallpaper the chimney breast or keep it plain?
Comments (20)so with the bed against the chimney breast you think its better to wallpaper the whole way round? i tried the picture on the wallpaper and it just gets lost and doesnt pop at all. i think the plain chimney breast gives a nice backdrop for pictures and makes the room look wider and brighter. with it plain it also gives option to paint chimney breast down the line. really appreciate your advice. i guess im now thinking i'll leave it plain with another layer of lining paper for now and worst case scenario if i dont like it in a month or two i can order more paper and paper over it. maybe its just one of those thibgs that takes time to get used to it. thanks...See MoreWhat to do with our chimney breast?
Comments (9)Hi, I painted the fireplace grey and the same colour as your walls, to show you...My reasoning for painting it the same as your walls is that you will probably have the door in white or possibly another colour, which makes it quite a stand out feature. That's one. And then you will add furniture to the room too, maybe a rug, curtains... so you'll be adding a lot of different colours anyway. So I'd keep the rest fairly calm. Comments (7)Remember to look at the aspect of the room, before going for a strong teal colour. It’s extraordinary how different the colours look, depending on whether the room faces north, south, east, or west. And don’t forget nighttime with electric lighting. Also, if your sofa is a deep teal, you could choose a much paler aqua/greeny blue, for your feature walls, and the other walls maybe an even paler shade than those, if your room is light. On the other hand, if the room is a bit gloomy, you could use a contrasting and complementary colour for the feature walls, such as a deep gold, a warm peach, or apricot, or even a warm soft pink (similar, maybe, to F&B’s Setting Plaster or Pink Ground). Depends upon what colours you actually like, as you have to live with it. Teal is basically a blue green, so if not using teal and its paler tones for walls, look for colours that are warm, on the opposite side of the colour wheel....See More- 7 years ago
7 years agoThe more 'colourful' the colours are, the more they start to jump about and interact, What this means is that the more blue your walls look, the more orange your sofa will look. The bluer your walls, the more orange your floor will look etc. Warm and cool colours - it's all relative. A hot orange will look cooler when white is added. A blue will look warmer if it is dark etc. You can see from the image below that the contrast in hue between the hague blue and the sofa and floor is quite stimulating, I wouldn't think this room would be improved with a patterned wallpaper. I agree with Daisy that a colour from the paper would make it coherent.
