Lighting Design Dilemma Kitchens

Quick question on kitchen cabinet lights

So my builder is doing the first fix in our kitchen and said to me that he'd left a connection ready in case I wanted cabinet lighting uner the wall cabinets. It wasnt something I'd even considered but now he's mentioned it I think it would be really good to have some task lighting under the cabinets, but its not something I've given any thought to, so I don't really know what I should be going for / looking for.

Questions - I'm not having the decorative plinth on the bottom of my cabinets so I guess I need something slim? I don't know whether to go for spotlights or LEDs? I'm not interested in having anything fancy like colour changes. As you can see, I've got cabinets running straight over my sink - should I have a break in lighting over the sink or continue it evenly?

Thanks for any help you can provide. I'm the type of person who likes to have a few weeks to research this type of thing and now I find I really need to make a decision in the next day or so!! I should also say that as this wasnt in the original budget I need to make the most cost effective choice as well. My builder said that I can have lights that need a transformer or not - it makes no difference him but he may as well have been talking Russian to me for all I understood that bit!

It’s nice especially in the winter months to have a background light left on in the kitchen. I have under cabinet wall lighting on only 2 long wall display units as they’re the only wall

units I have as most of my storage is in a tall bank of units. I’m sure mine are self adhesive and definitely work from a small transformer. Photo below shows a close up of them But you can’t actually see that bit

Hi there. Completely agree with everyone, you should paint the cupboards. I really like the colours in this picture as I think that the slightly 'greyer' off white cupboards would tie in well with your beautiful grey tiles. You wouldn't necessarily have to go so light on your worktop as in this picture. The laminate you showed in your third picture is really nice, where is it from? Currently doing my kitchen and trying to find a laminate that I like!

LED strips for low level cupboard/island plinths have their merits in showcasing themselves, however aren't necessary if the space already houses good lighting from overhead lights or natural lighting. However, using under cabinet lighting underneath wall units works particularly well when the main lighting isn't required and the occupants wish to have a dimmer atmosphere. They can also serve the purpose of providing necessary light for worktops when being used for cooking etc. www.pwjarchitects.com

The OH sprayed our kitchen cabinets with a professional spray gun, but he did have all of the proper specialist masks and protective clothing etc. He set up a spray booth - inside while the kitchen was being remodelled and then outside in a gazebo once the kitchen had the flooring done. The finish was excellent and where we've needed to touch up, he's just done it with slightly watered down paint on a sponge or brush. We've rollered and brushed units before and spraying gives by far the best finish and soooooo much quicker. We went for F&B Oval Room Blue - the reason being the F&B paints are perfect for use with a spray gun, whereas a lot of "matched" paint doesn't spray as well and clogs the gun. Doesn't the kitchen manufacturers have a standard colour you like or could you choose a RAL colour you like. Alternatively, wouldn't the manufacturers just paint it with F&B paint for you?

Thanks for comments. Unfortunately since this is a project that has now past the 1 yr mark and we had to completely strip the house to its bear bones we had to purchase a second hand kitchen. It was previously a football managers so very expensive new. Made by hand. I got no choice with granite top- black it is! Initially I was wanting brass but all handles taps are chrome hence the pic of chrome manta light (it’s not shiny chrome) so now you have thrown me!! I am really indecisive and love too many things and never sure what works well. If I go for all brass fittings should I also go for brass coloured manta style light? I know both the blue ball light and green long light would go with brass fittings. At the moment the blue light has a black fitting, would I need to change that if went for silver metal or brass? Light switch covers was going for brushed nickel as I don’t like antique brass when I looked at switch covers- I’m getting click ones Lts- you mention mushroom colour and then fire earth apple??? I’m not sure which you are referring to as a close match to mussel colour

Be aware that your lighting will need to be correct rating for use near water - and also - if you have shiny worktop you may get a bounce back glare off the worktop ! So a defused light might be better if you have shiny tops ! Try holding a torch under to see any effect first !
