brass splashback.

So, I’m tempted to get a brass splashback. But I have loads of questions about them.
Does anyone actually have one, or are they just for the pages of the interiors magazines? Are they a nightmare to keep clean? (We cook. We’re not neat cooks).
What do you actually buy? And how is it fitted?

Please Houzzers, stop me from making an expensive mistake...

Many many many moons ago I worked in a studio with brass sinks and brass between worktop and cabinets on a couple of displays ... once a month the fumes of brasso nearly killed me ! So for me - I’d avoid ... but things may be different now - finger prints might not appear at the mere thought of touching them - stains from cooking or washing up might not need to be buffed off straight away . And you might not get blinded by the glare of your under cabinet lighting bouncing off the brass... so I’ll sit back and wait with you for anyone who actually has it in their home to come in and answer too... ( we might be here a while - so I’ve brought Hobnobs, if you’d like one ? )

I seem to remember MATH posting something about them, but I don’t know how to tag people on here....

Hi, I've now had quartz worktops fitted in a white with grey and mirror flecks (compact lactea) & attach photos. Cabinets are all done too. My next area is what to do for splashback behind the hob/under the extractor. I originally wanted to do red glass across the length of the wall, but we have had under unit lights fitted below the higher cabinets and at night I can change these to any colour I want. If I do red all across I won't get the effect of the lights. Not even sure red would go? The wooden chairs are going and will be replaced & I still need to choose my island lights (thinking 3 pendants hanging). Husband thinks stainless steel sheet behind hob. I'm not sure this will look right with dark glass hob under it & wonder if it is hard to look clean all the time. What ideas do you all have as you helped with the worktops. I also show the dining table and the new open lounge area (intend to put a rug down). We also still need to find wall lights.

Hi Yolanda - I'd change the stools, table and chairs, and swap the pendants for something in coloured glass or (personally) metallic, and change the cabinet handles from steel to brass/gold. Instant lift. Splashback-wise, try distressed mirror (suitably tempered and toughened) as it has loads of personality, bounces light around and is easy to clean. Then play with wall colour. Warm accents will stop the wood door from jarring so much (or paint it, if you can convince your husband). You have a lovely kitchen - will take very little to get it where you want!

Thank you so much everyone for all the comments and ideas! I am definitely swaying towards tiles now or the opaque glass in same colour as wall. Very helpful to see other ideas too with some different style Splashbacks etc. Thanks for taking time to show a design on my photo that’s really helpful. I see what you mean about the shelves needing to be quite small on right hand side of hob. I was thinking of 1 or 2 small ones on that side and longer ones on other side. But yes other option is to have something more decorative on right hand side... but we already have a big brass/black antique style clock for the opposite wall which is a dark grey (see extra pic- but clock not up yet!). These were put in our house 14 years ago - started marking about 6-7 yrs ago and now just before I take them out I can mark with my finger nail. Think the quality of the black sockets are better now. Love the half wall ... and the industrial tiles that have been suggested. It’s going to look great!

I don't have one but here's a link to the pros and cons. It will develop a patina which some love others not. There's also a link to a supplier who could help with the fitting question. I suspect this is the link MATH posted as they always seem to pop up

I have also seen some brass effect tiles albeit quite a while ago but will see if I can find them

I got some samples from a maker and they advised not using quite a few of them for splashbacks! They will stain and oxidise and some don’t wash well so it might worth speaking to them and getting some sample pieces send to see what finishes you can get. Some are ok if not behind a hob but some not as well so it’s worth checking.
Can’t remember the company name but they were in Liverpool so should be easy to find

Tani - what did you go for in the end?

Definitely has to go behind the hob, so that might limit things.

Definitely like patina, but not so keen on great smears of grease. Still not convinced anyone actually has these!

Consider glass splashbacks for practicality.
Decoglaze have a finish called Moon gold that has a similar lux feel

Ooh, thanks, I’ll have a look at that. Haven’t looked at glass as generally it’s part of quite a crisp modern look, that just isn’t me, but that one looks lovely.

@Alix I struggled for ages trying to find one and the ones that were suitable (mostly aged which weren’t as nice as I thought they would be) were coming in at over £600 for the length of our back run. No hob though so I’m not sure which ones would have been suitable by heat.

I ended up just painting the back wall in the same colour as the units as it’s vast and I might either have clear glass put over at some point or paint one up in gold spray with a waterproof varnish over. We do get splashes all the time from the tap so it will need something.

Oh I did get some panels from Ikea who do a fake brass (like a brushed light gold) effect which is really gold tone aluminium. Worth checking out as v cheap! Using them in my utility now instead, ha ha.

@Tani - thanks, and great minds think alike- I too bought some of the IKEA panels but I have realised there are limits to my thriftiness!

We too just painted to begin with, but it needs something now and I don’t like how unfinished it’s looking on my kitchen.

I’ve just got a quote from the metal Panels supplier above, and it’s not as bad as I thought, my run is just over 4m long though.

We have used antique mirror which looks great and comes in numerous finishes and density and would be easier to maintain? Great for reflecting light too.

@Minnie and Grouse, that’s a nice idea I’ll have a think about that. Do you know if you can run mirror behind a hob? Assume it’s ok as long as it’s toughened glass?

There’s a company called Rough Old Glass who do gorgeous “aged” mirrors, including splash backs. I think something similar (possibly the same?) was on George Clarke’s programme a few weeks back.

The toughened mirror is fine behind a hob, I don't think it needs to be toughened if it is over 20cm away from the heat source but assume that's not relevant here. I will be using rough old glass (when I eventually get my extractor changed to avoid cut outs). They do offer a measure and installation service but it didnt work out particularly cheap for me as it's just going behind my aga. It may be worth the spend for you though as the glass can't be drilled etc once tempered and I assume you have a few cut outs given the length needed. My wall is also wonky so measuring/templating is somewhat tricky. You may also find local companies offer antiqued mirrors so can opt for measure and install (and peace of mind as they'll have to correct any errors) but it may be a case of ringing round them all as they certainly don't advertise it where I live. I found a number whom offered antiqued mirror but only one whom could offer toughened.

i obviously love antiqued mirror but it does also mean tidy worktops :)

We used copper leaf tiles from Original Style - they’re not cheap but the shine is great and doesn’t fade/oxidise. Glass splash backs that we found had a copper “colour” rather than the real sparkle of metal.
Pretty sure they do them in brass/gold too.
