lights at top of the stairs/landing - help please

any bright ideas ( sorry!) for my problem area... top of the stairs onto a narrow landing with restricted head height and no void above. previously there was a spot light there which was ugly and glared in your eyes as you came up the stairs. cant seem to think what the solution would be...all suggestions gratefully recieved

Thank you for your ideas, minnie - I wish we could keep the wallpaper, as it is (or was) nice. Unfortunately, it is very 'tired' and looks dirty. We are definitely getting a carpet for the stairs, and unfortunately, we can't afford to put new wallpaper up, at the moment - we have enough magnolia paint (donated to us) to do the whole area, but I wanted to add a touch of soft colour to it. The carpet we are getting is very similar to the photo I have attached. As you have suggested, I have also attached a couple of photos of the hallway without the paint. Thank you again :D

With white woodwork, I suggest painting the walls and woodwork in semi-gloss white. White woodwork and walls will make the space visually larger, and semi-gloss paint reflects light and is easy to clean.

Well what a coincident! Visited a friend yesterday who is having her hallway, stairs and landing painted on Monday and wanted my advice (!). She has chosen a Karndean style herringbone floor for her hall and a soft check stair carpet in a warm caramel colour. Staircase is oak and glass. Not much natural light in the hall. We looked through loads of paint charts but she didn’t want the expense of F&B or Little G. Then we both felt Dulux Caramel Latte or Caramel Blush would look good. She later bought some matchpots and loves both shades, so she’s having the Latte on one wall and the Blush on the rest. They are lovely warm tones with very appropriate names!

You definately have the drop for a more statement shade in the staircase. An option would be a shade that allows light upwards as well as down, but please avoid a chandelier! I think the fashion for chandeliers has past and they are a bit cold in their feel and not welcoming cor a hall. Something with fabric texture could work well, or one of those petal shades.

Hi Sarah,

Would be great to see a photo but in the meantime please see the following link for inspiration. Spot lights are horrid on stairways! You are right they can almost blind you and generally cast a cold feel over a space. Something that will diffuse the light will be much better and create a cosier ambience whilst providing practical light too for a stairway. Another popular option is downlights of course but this will involve more work. Low profile ceiling lights

I had this type of light fitted at the top of my stairs. It looks absolutely lovely and much more sophisticated than a spotlight. Round chandelier

Hi Sarah, it would be great if you could upload a picture. For now, a flush light could work but then again that might not look that appealing to the eye. If you wanted to splash out a bit more you could opt for a wall light at the top and some going up the stairs.
