Kitchen Light Advice

Hi, I’m working on a small narrow galley kitchen which has 1 ceiling light fitting. It’s not a bright kitchen in terms of light. I can’t afford to have any additional lighting installed. The ceiling light is in the centre of the room near the cooker. Other than getting a strip light, in people’s experience what would be a suitable light to install that could handle a kitchen environment? Thanks Shirley

I’d probably change it to one like this which has multiple lights on it you can angle in different ways and directions (just the first pic I found as an example)

Thank you for taking the time to reply Gabby. I wasn’t sure whether this type might lead to flickering if the kitchen got too steamy / moist. I had one in a bathroom years ago and it used to do that but it could have just been the quality of the light fitting...

Hi @shanagarry80, thanks for your comments! I'm not at home right now so I can't be sure how big the extractor fan actually is but it is over a 90cm hob and oven, so must be at least 90cm. It doesn't look particularly large in situ and the inbuilt lights are very good for illuminating the cooking area. Have a look at Gutmann's website; as I said in one of my earlier comments, other companies do make similar extractors but our kitchen people thought this one best, however our kitchen is now 3 years old and a lot can happen in that time! Hope you have fun designing your new kitchen!

Hi Patrizia, Ok so for the island, I take it there is an extractor fan in the middle for the hob? If so I would stick to the 2 spots either side and make sure your extractor fan has lighting (they usually do). The alternative could be to have a downdraft extractor fan (if it is still possible to change this). They are not as expensive as you might think, obviously as with everything you get what you pay for. Here's one relatively cheap but can fetch up to 2K! https://www.amazon.co.uk/Cookology-CDD900BK-Kitchen-Downdraft-Extractor/dp/B0191SSA5I If you do decide to have downdraft extractor fan, I would ditch the spots and put three pendant lights. This is going to to add instant character and statement pieces into your kitchen without looking like a football stadium! For the dining area I would also suggest to have one medium sized chandelier modern/traditional whatever you fancy. We are having recessed downlights and the light won't be changeable but will all be dimmable. We have quite a few so I don't think budget will stretch to Philips Hue. We have one pendant over table and one over the island but maybe a large one with 2 or 3 bulbs off it, I've not picked it yet. My kitchen is all dark and floor will be dark grey tiles but all walls white and like I say, 3 large windows. I'm really not sure what to pick even having read all the info about different light colours. I don't want to make the wrong decision and regret it!

It shouldn’t flicker. Wouldn’t that be a faulty wire causing that.

Son has a similar one and his is fine.

I think if it’s a galley kitchen the 2nd one you posted still won’t light up the ends of the kitchen particularly well.

I think a long one may work But depends which directions and how much light it casts out.
