Help with tiny open plan with bay window
Hi there! I have a tiny kitchen/living room in a weird shape and no storage and I am trying to repurpose the furniture provided by the landlord since this is a rental apartment. I currently have two two-seat couches, a round table with fitting stools underneath, a Single wardrobe that holds all our utility stuff, a kitchen cabinet that is needed since I only have 3 cupboards and 4 drawers, a tv stand with a TV and a coffee table. It sounds and it is a lot.
I am thinking of removing one couch to open up the space and trying to rearrange the remaining furniture inside the room.
Problem is:
Where do I put the tv stand and the couch since the bay window has the radiator in front of it and therefore not a great idea to put the TV in front of the radiator.
I am thinking of changing where the kitchen cabinet is placed in order for it to fit better in a corner of the room. Also on top of kitchen cabinet I have sandwich maker and microwave.
I used the Floorplanner tool to make the below floorplan. If you have any ideas where to put what, I would be delighted to hear.

Comments (29)Hey Nisha! I love your Option 4 and what a fab design- looks amazing!!! I think Option 4 has lots of space and flow through the room without having to walk around furniture and is a great adult space with formal and informal dining with the addition of the breakfast bar. If little people do come along in the future and you need a play space when they're a little bit older, you can always whip out the breakfast bar and move the table up closer to the kitchen at that point- it's a lovely flexible design. Comments (8)How wide is the bay? (Not convinced the plan is entirely accurate if the previous people had a sofa on the left wall?). Ignore the furniture choice, was trying to find photos at the right angle! I might do something like this. You may also be able to have another chair on the left wall. If you go for an upholstered footstool you have more seating when needed and I’d choose a low back sofa so it’s not poking over the top of the window sill. If you don’t want the sofa to impose on the room too much, choose a colour that doesn’t contrast with the walls too much. Perhaps choose a rug that is large enough for all of the front feet of the furniture to sit on. Comments (13)It would be a shame to remove such an unusual bay window. Very few windows go right down to the floor like this. In many ways this creates quite a modern look as well as being a beautiful original feature. Have you thought about extending directly out from the kitchen, incorporating the utility (and maybe part of the covered passage?). This could be 2 storey with lots of glazing/bifold doors to the garden with lovely views back of your spectacular bay window. Take the wall down between the kitchen and bay window room to make it all open plan whilst retaining an interesting shape. If you still want a separate utility this could be put into the rear area of the garage, maybe with a WC. Upstairs, you could put in a shower room in part of the existing bedroom 3 next to the bathroom and with the extension it would be a good size bedroom, probably large enough to be the master with dressing room area. This should help to increase the value of the house by creating what everyone wants for a master bedroom....See More

It all depends on how you use the space? Do you entertain a lot or have more than 2 people in your room? Do think the second sofa is a bit much for the room, but if you need seating then perhaps think about placing a small bench instead?
You definitely have a lot of furniture and it might be worth buying multifunctional furniture like a coffee table which doubles up as a dining table. Something like this:

Also think if you have a coffee table then you wouldn't need a side table as well.

@Wise Owl Interiors yes I think removing this sofa would be the best scenario going forward and adding an armchair or a poof if more spaced is needed. Would you put the sofa in front of the window and TV on the big wall you reckon? I thought maybe that way I could make the big wall the focal point. Nice article by the way. :)
@Ellie thank you very much for your suggestion. This is how I initially had the room to be honest but I felt it was really cramped and it just didn't have space for me to move around a lot. This is how it would look like.

I have actually started looking into such furniture to be honest and I totally love the multifunctional furniture in general but it s is a bit over my budget since I 'm not quite sure for how long I will be in this place so I am trying to repurpose the way the room looks with existing furniture, minus one sofa of course.
In terms of gathering and stuff, although I really like having friends around I feel really claustrophobic and packed in this living room so I don't feel like inviting friends over. So I hope a transformation will help me to have more gatherings. :)

6 years agoRemoving one sofa does create more space. And you have 4 stools in your dining table, so seats at hand when people come over.
Here I chopped into your floorplan with the furniture already there:
And if that wardrobe creates a narrow passage, perhaps place it elsewhere and look for a shallow cabinet that doubles as side table.

Wow @rinked! Thank you very very much for taking the time to shaffle the furnitures around for me. That's great!!! :) Really really appreciate it!!
I do hope I won't lose the cosy feeling of the living room to be honest but I really feel I lack space to move around right now. From time to time, we also use the place to host any guests over with an airbed or use it to put laundry to dry so space is really vital to us.
The sofa is actually orange, see photo below, and I don't really like the colour so I was thinking to buy a sofa cover to dress it up.
I have heard designers advise to use light colours for the couch so not sure if I should pick a beige or a light pattern like the ones below. And I was also thinking of a rug as well so I guess the best thing is to first buy the sofa cover and then move to the rug to match everything.

I do know and understand that this is far from ideal... But when I bought everything I was just in a hurry to do so since we didn't have ANY storage within the place. I do want to repaint them at some point but not sure this can be done within the house and we don't have a garden or so.

Waterbased paint can be used indoors without a problem. When using a nylon (scotchbrite) sponge to thoroughly clean the cabinets (with the rough side), you don't need sanding. Inbetween layers use the same (scotchbrite) sponge dry. The amount of dust will be minimal.
On melamine surfaces you should use either a special primer or a special paint.

PRO6 years agohi Anna, would this layout work at all? unless of course you want to use the fireplace or have it as a feature. then you can get rid of one sofa and get an armchair.

I just wanted to say a huge and massive thank you to all you amazing people!!! It's amazing how much more spacious the house feels and what difference it made to my psychology and my feeling for the house. I still have a long way to go but just wanted to share my enthusiasm with you all that helped me change both the living room and my mood for the house!!!
