To bay or not to bay? What should I do with my bay window???

Hi everyone

i have a beautiful bay window which is an original feature of the house and having lived inthe house for over 4 years and careful consideration, I an proposing to remove the window to extend the house and create an open plan living area. I have a a double length garage and only 3 double bedrooms and a small box room. any ideas on how I can maximise the living space and value of the house jn the best way (whilst keeping the front half of the garage, thank you.

Stunning window. Why not extend the house and then reinstate the same window? If you get a professional to dismantle it, store it while the extension is built and then add it on at the end of the new section. Would be a shame to lose a window like that!

Do you need to extend? If you want open plan living isn’t it just a case of taking down the wall to join the kitchen to this room ? It would be a beautiful kitchen/diner with that lovely window. Back half of garage could be converted to provide utility/pantry space or home office.

I think some beautiful white voile for the day time, mounted on a very discreet ceiling mounted track, such as Silentgliss, which can be bent into the bay. I would then put a bay pole in front of this with whichever curtains go with your scheme, using a blackout lining. I would be careful not to have the curtains gathered too full though as you do not have a lot of space to the left of the window to pull them back. Although unconventional, to overcome this problem, you might want to consider having the curtains made to different widths, ie a shorter left curtain and a wider right curtain so that when they are closed they meet at the corner. On a flat window this would be very conspicuous, but your window is unusual.

I too thought shutters would block out too much light, but the look when fitted is so lovely, and with wider size slats, the more light they let in. The pics below have small slats but its the same style of bay with shutters. Also don't have the push rods on the front if you want a cleaner look. Having the slats split so top/bottom open separately like pic below is also good if you want privacy without shutting out light from the top. High gloss shutters also reflect light into the room and shutters seem to go with any look, period or contemporary.

Thank you guys for your advice took it on bored. Gonna paint the bay eventually called rock salt creamy with slight bit of grey. The windows look so much better. Then think the drive needs to be on the list after someone had an accident with the wall.

Hello! Almost forgot all about this post Thanks for all the advice! Really Helpful suggestions! I think the art tv in place of where the current tv is seems to be the clear winner. I’ve been thinking of painting the room a dark green and adding in an extra sofa to create an L shape. Those comfy looking velvet sofas and footstool would be ideal. Not sure on the colour mind you. I see a lot of examples of woodwork being painted to match the wall colour but I’m not sure on this vs white vs some other colour like light grey. Also hoping to replace the rug with something darker because the dog and white rugs don’t really go together! I guess I’m trying to pick a new colour scheme at this point. The bay window is still a tricky one but I will start with a lounge chair, maybe a lot of plants too? I do some painting so might pop an easel in the corner over there but messy paint and nice furniture might be a disaster :D I realise this has become a whole lounge redecoration post ha.

Thank you for your replies. Ive spent 4 years mulling it over as it is so beautiful but it's single glazed and not particularly safe as I have a young child too. I have looked at extending around the bay and taking the wall between the kitchen and the living room down to create an open plan look but it doesn't quite work. The selling point is the garden and I was going to replace the bay with full width full height crittal style sliding doors.

The window is beautiful, I’m sure when you first viewed the house, it was one of the reasons you loved the place. I agree with the other comments about knocking through to either the garage or kitchen. Before you do anything drastic have you looked into double glazing the existing window. Im sure it wouldn’t be cheap but have a look at renovategreen.co.uk.

Your child will grow up in the normal course of events, and you'll regret losing that beautiful window. You say the selling point is the garden---and that bay presents it beautifully. I would urge you to keep it.

I also urge you to leave it, its stunning and a real feature. If you really need to extend then I would look at other ways. I think it could well devalue the house to remove it.

I would never even consider removing such a stunning window!

I’d remove the kitchen wall instead to create open plan.

A friend replaced her single glazed bay window ( with stained glass lights) with a double glazed exact copy - as it was at the front of the house it was important to keep it.

It would be such a shame to discard your beautiful bay window for something that is a fashion trend now, that might be " so last season" in a few years time

It would be a shame to remove such an unusual bay window. Very few windows go right down to the floor like this. In many ways this creates quite a modern look as well as being a beautiful original feature. Have you thought about extending directly out from the kitchen, incorporating the utility (and maybe part of the covered passage?). This could be 2 storey with lots of glazing/bifold doors to the garden with lovely views back of your spectacular bay window. Take the wall down between the kitchen and bay window room to make it all open plan whilst retaining an interesting shape. If you still want a separate utility this could be put into the rear area of the garage, maybe with a WC. Upstairs, you could put in a shower room in part of the existing bedroom 3 next to the bathroom and with the extension it would be a good size bedroom, probably large enough to be the master with dressing room area. This should help to increase the value of the house by creating what everyone wants for a master bedroom.

My apologies as I am not the best person to offer any suggestions regarding possible extensions but I would, like all the other posters, strongly urge you to retain this magnificent feature window. It is extraordinarily beautiful and a joy to behold; encompassing the garden view perfectly. Please don't commit an act of architectural vandalism by removing it. No modern replacement will have the character and grace of this original and unique feature; it will just look like so many other replacement windows. I am sure some of the suggestions above could solve your problem in a way that allows you to retain it and getting rid of it will almost certainly devalue your home.

Access to the garden is key I agree. Instead of extending out into the garden I’m wondering if you you opened the reception room to the garage and put the kitchen in the garage area, with a pantry and utility gained perhaps by taking a little more of the garage than first thought. This would give a lovely family/kitchen/living room and doors could lead out from the kitchen end to the garden.
The kitchen would then become a sitting room, again with doors to the garden.
I would consider a loft extension to give you a lovely master suite. Perhaps extending over the rear of the garage too
Extending out the new sitting room would give a bigger third bedroom....with perhaps a balcony. Balconies seem the right style for this house somehow...

Thank you all for your responses, i think it’s an overwhelming yes to the bay!! I’m going to look at extending into the garage as most suggest and extend over the garage as well. i think creating doorways directly onto the garden from the existing kitchen and garage will take away the need got my 6 year old to going near the window! Thank you all you beautiful people for inputting 😘
