Putting a sofa in front of a window – Lounge layout dilemma
Comments (13)At the moment I never watch TV in the daytime, so glare isn’t a problem. And that window faces North so I don't think it would ever be a big issue.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> Not a fan of having it where the previous owners did. It dominates the room too much. I'd like the fireplace to be the main focal point in the room rather than the telly. If I have it on the cabinet (Option 2) I was thinking of building in an automatic TV lift so it disappears from view. I've got plans downloaded from the internet and it looks like a good weekend DIY project!...See MoreLayout for small-ish open plan lounge / dining room - blank canvas
Comments (6)I'd go for nothing in the bay except for maybe a low chest, the windows are very long and to close to the floor to stand anything in front of them, without obscuring them. Therefore, if you place a sofa on the long 3 m wall you can then put the t.v / hi/fi system on the shorter, hallway wall opposite, creating a focal point. Place the dining room table and chairs at the other end of the room nearer the kitchen. This leaves you plenty of space to move about. I'd have maybe side tables or a side table near to both ends or at least one end of the sofa to have a lamp for reading etc You could also opt for a standard lamp!...See MoreTv in lounge/diner or 'snug'?
Comments (6)We also thought hard about this when moving to our house. The solution was to buy a small tv for the playroom and keep another tv in our front lounge. We are not massive tv watchers, but we enjoy watching a good film, in a mess free room! Also, there is no way I would allow my kids in my lounge to watch tv on a regular basis as it is the one room in the house that we like to keep quiet and tidy!...See MoreLounge Layout, Design and Furnishings
Comments (35)Hi, Reviving a bit of an old post here with some more thoughts. I agree with everyone that the sofa is probably best looking onto the window but having given it a try it makes the TV pretty much not visible unfortunately. I can't think of anywhere that I could place the TV that would give a good angle for the sofa in that position. (Other than pulling it out from the wall and angling it, which looked pretty poor when I tried it) Open to suggestions though. I may just have to move the sofa back a little to create slightly more room for chairs. I think if I put it right up against the wall the space will possibly be too big for conversation. In the end I've actually grown to like the eames chair and chesterfield combo so will just add one more chair now. either on the same side as the current chair or two chairs facing each other at different sides of the sofa. :) @Emily - The dinning table is further away from the kitchen in the window thats true. The alternative I think would be to shift everything up towards the bay window more and put the dinning table at the other end of the room. I think that might look a little odd since the fireplace is in the centre?...See MoreM M
