How to tile this step?
Hi all,
This may be pretty obvious to most but i can't quite figure out the best thing to do.
I've got a small entrance-way (very small entrance-way to be exact) which has a small step down into the hall.
Currently the hall has wooden flooring and i was hoping to tile the small entrance area but there is a weird skirting kind of arrangement from the entrance-way down to the wooden hall flooring.
Ideally i'd like to tile over the edge of the step also as i think that would look best but i was just wondering if anyone would know how best to do this? The wooden floor already runs underneath this bit of "skirting", i'd assume i'd have to make a more solid step somehow before then tiling it.
Apologies if this is more a "how to" rather than a design question as such but i'm just not sure how to approach it, where the skirting should stop and finish etc. etc. so any help would be greatly appreciated.
It's just a bit weird.

6 years agoI think you need to remove the 'skirting' on the step and just tile down, if the flooring runs under you might be lucky and there'll be no gap. Are you going to tile yourself or get someone in? Looking at pics I think you might be required to have an edging for grip, a tiler would know though. These are exterior steps so might be different.

Comments (6)I wish it were that simple! Unfortunately this was done when the extension was built about 20 years ago waaaay before we bought the place. I believe it's something to do with the way the ground slopes down towards the street - I think the drains are too close to the surface to go any lower with the floor so perhaps that's why they did it. Comments (9)@Carolina thanks. Do you know how that works when you use flooring on steps? Do you build them as standard and then clad them over? I like the angled step idea, sadly our walls are badly out of square so your design kind of feeds you towards the right where as our room skews left, if you see the angle of the tiles. @Ellie there was a lot to design around. We needed a tall unit for the fridge and wanted one for the boiler housing and ovens. On the wall on the right in the picture there was only space for one tall one before you hit the steel. On the wall opposite the units on the left the height is only 1.88m high, putting any high units that side would have blocked the line of the velux openings. We could have left a gap before starting the bank of units but it would have just looked weird. Doorway is 70cm, same as most the doorways in our Victorian house. The first unit is just a standard unit for storage with shelves, the 2nd unit is the fridge but there's enough space for 2 good size steps with the door fully open....See More

So the plot thickens.
I took off the "skirting" and there is basically just a void underneath for some pipework - images attached for reference.
I'm assuming in order to tile this i'd probably need to box in the area first. Probably screw a baton into the floor or something and affix a bit of wood (ply?)
On a separate point i wonder if it's worth bringing the level out into the main hallway a little?
Edging on the step i agree is a must - either a tile edging or the oak nosing i think would both work.

Just to update, have boxed it in but the floor still has some deflection in it so I was leaning now towards vinyl or laminate tile/planks as I’m just concerned a little about the suitability of the floor for tile.
Do you think something as ornate & busy as the attached in such a small space would be a bad idea?
