Overboard heating versus underfloor heating

Does anyone have any experience using overboard heating? We know it will be less work and subsequently cost a little less than traditional underfloor heating but I’m just wondering what we are compromising by going for this option?

We actually did a bit of both. The existing house uses overboard and the new extension uses underfloor. the floor is all controlled by different zones so you eventually get the timing of it how you want! the underfloor takes much much longer to heat up but when it does it retains the heat for much longer. The overboard heats up quick,

is warm on the feet, but then cools down quicker too.

Hello :) We have now plastered and painted first coat of white paint.. now deciding on the type of tiles.. we like the idea of Moroccon style tiles on the floor.. but as the bathroom is pretty narrow.. having a feature on the wall is a bit akward.. Our bathtub will be on the right and toilet under the window (same position as old layout) as all plumbing is already there. Unsure whether to have a concealed cistern toilet unit which can make the area look neater.. But I can't seem to find a good quality looking concealed unit (floor to under window measurement 98cm) width available is 50cm..or should i just go for a standard normal toilet. On the right after the bathtub we will have space for a double vanity sink unit.. opposite wall have a vertical stainless steel radiator... Unsure whether to go for a towel warmer or a vertical radiator? The bathroom will not have underfloor heating. Room dimensions are (length 335cm width 125cm) Any design ideas etc will be appreciated. Front hallway- I say save your money leave it up. Cost of removal is minor but you will likely have to move radiators and electrics and make good plasterwork and coving- I say protect another £1500 profit. Present the larger back reception as a living room and present the front reception as the dining room. Given that the bathroom is likely to go upstairs make the downstairs bathroom into a room to access the garden- I would present the kitchen as a kitchen/breakfast room with doors to see the garden as being able to see from the front door to the back garden should pay dividend.

Thanks for responding it’s really helpful. What flooring do you have on top of the overboard? Are you happy with the decision? Not sure if you are able to share we me the company you used abs whether you would recommend? Thanks again

We have got porcelain flooring throughout. I love the heating system but in hindsight would probably have kept it all the same type! Probably overboard but I can understand the benefits of both. With the U.K. weather it’s just really hard to predict and put it on hours before in anticipation of when it’s going to get cold so the overboard feels a bit.

we used wundertrade and yes they pretty good! our builder installed it all though

good luck! Either way you won’t go wrong but just be aware of the change in behaviour and anticipating when the heating should go on. once you e for your thermostats figured out it’s great
