interior help for extension

Hello, I am extending my home into the garden by two metres. I have attached the plan so you can see the strange shape of our home. The kitchen will be a u shaped kitchen so I have drawn that on the plan. I want to replace the cold tiled floor with LVT wood effect flooring. I wasn’t sure given the strange shape of be room which way to lay the floor. I love the look of herringbone pattern wood flooring but I’m not sure if this would look weird given the shape. Any advise welcomed :)

I agree that herringbone pattern may accentuate the unusual shape. If you had plank wood style LVT with the planks laid horizontally across the kitchen the shape would be less obvious I think? Something like this

I think a herringbone would look great. Prevent it from being 90 degrees or in line with a wall. Free form. If that explanation makes any sense (I'm not english).

If you do decide on long planks, follow the longest line of sight (thus left in your floorplan), such as this:

I also see your scetch for a kitchen too, your kitchen is wide enough, just add two tall cabinets against the hallway wall. This way your table might fit in better.

I did set up account on Qtect, I am not sure the service offering at QTect provides the adequate level of interactivity for me to submit a detailed design brief. Good sales pitch though, but I am not sure I would be able to set and convey my expectations however the propective designers budgetary need is already baselined right from the onset, which equates to a one way street, what if the 3 options (from all the designer proposals) are all rubbish, I am not sure it is a good idea to commit to paying for work that does not involve focused consultation.

@jonathandb1972 thanks for the suggestions - I'm currently playing around with different options for the main bathroom and yes the attic definitely needs a bathroom added in. The windows in the main room are small windows at the top of the wall to try to get some additional light in but will still allow space for furniture. @kitchenpod - definitely worth considering a bigger utility linked to the garage. We've got to explore whether there is asbestos in the ceiling of the utility or not. The benefit of the utility as it is is it gives us space to let our dogs out without the full run of the main garden but I think it's definitely worth exploring this in more detail. I've been playing with the layout in the ensuite/walk in wardrobe in the master bedroom too.

I agree with Hugh re supervision plus by the time the extension is built your son will be nearing an age where he understands a little more. You may also want him in there to cook with you soon. I'm sure the kitchen can be designed from a safety aspect too if that's the only thing holding you back. I think the advantage of using OnePlan is that Karen can look at the whole house spatially etc and you're not tied to a particular kitchen company (I'm not on commission!). Click on her profile for reviews etc. I second Hugh's comments re karndean too! I like the heringbone parquet! If you did want to hire an interior designer (designers tend to be qualified in planning too I think as opposed to an interior decorator although many of those could be qualified by experience) then you could find you save as much as you spend. Some of them will offer you their trade discount which if doing the whole house could add up to an awful lot. They may also make you save from any mistakes and I've made a few of those! I'd go on houzz and search for pros and look at their reviews and previous work. I think you need to meet people yourself though as it's important to have a good working relationship and make sure they understand you

Hi Suchi, Can't see all the info on the upload so difficult to make final recommendation, but it does look as though a compact utility is doable and probably desirable. We can certainly provide full 3-D designs & plans down to detailed concepts for kitchens, bathrooms, utilities etc, though this is a chargeable service. Please message if you wish an idea of costs. We may also be able to provide kitchen & bathroom units etc "supply only", even remotely - the Falkland Islands is the furthest we've had anything delivered! My gut feeling would be to suggest the LVT is in planks and is laid perpendicular to the face of the new extension - this way the eye is drawn to the light and view in the garden. The cutting along the angled wall would work in this case but I think it would be difficult to achieve with a herringbone.

I also agree with the other comment above about the layout of the kitchen, it feels a little awkward at the moment and could probably do with a little review. If you have a kitchen designer on board I would ask for a 3D view of the space so you can get a better understanding of how it would work.
