Kitchen Design Ideas

Hi everyone, looking for some help with our new kitchen in our new extension. We are really feeling pressured to get this right and not make any regretful decisions. The only things we are set on are using our range cooker and we want a big breakfasting island with no sink in it. Any pointers or ideas would be much appreciated. thanks

have you thought about making full height cabinets that also hide/incorporate the utility door that go all the way to the end of the utility wall and then only have low cabinets in a similar style to what you have currently. You could install the range in the island if you plan it properly and get a flush hood integrated into the ceiling or one that pulls the air downwards.

I think it might be a bit dark in the kitchen . Only one small window ? Where it says entrance - is that to the garden or the main route into the house ( for visitors etc) I think a bit more info is required please !!

In a room that size, you have plenty of scope. I always think an island is a great additional workspace, and having part of it as a breakfast bar makes for a very sociable space. I'd go for an Lshape with the sink on one leg and hob on the other, an island towards the middle of the room, and the dining table in front of the big doors. That's very basic layout, but what you really need to do is think about the way you'll use the space. How many people eat there? Do you cook a lot? Do you have guests over often? What do you need to store- lots of fresh ingredients, dry goods, frozen foods, baking equipment? Do you want a walk-in pantry? What type of fridge? Are you tall/short, ie will overhead cabinets work for you? What items need counter space? Toaster, coffee machine, mixer, microwave? What kind of oven/hob do you prefer? Will you do other things in the kitchen besides cooking and eating- laundry? Office type work? Kids playing? Have a think about all this, and browse through kitchen pictures with an eye on what would work for you in a practical sense. A well laid out kitchen is the most important thing in the house IMO !!

My advice is stop wait think this through. Christmas is very soon don't rush it. Get lots of advice and maybe get some professional kitchen designers to draw some options up for you. The plan you show to be frank doesn't look great. So much more can be done than just putting units all the way round the room. There is too little detail on your plan to be able to come up with specific suggestions but think about things like: - opening up the window or enlarging the doorway to fit patio doors onto the garden - trying one straight run of units and an island with sink or cooker rather than units all the way round the room. -think about mixing free standing and fitted furniture. A dresser for example gives lots of storage but is narrower than a standard kitchen unit - think about using non standard depth of units I suggest looking at the ikea kitchen catalogue. Even if you don't like the units they are very good at showing novel layout solutions.

Hi Michelle, We've worked on various projects with banquette seating - where the island incorporates a bench seat to which a dining table is added. The entrance is the main route to the house and facing onto the road access to the property. The actual traditional front door is to the other end of the house that has no road access. With regards to day light the roof ridge detail is glazed to help with lighting as the extension will be north facing. I can try and provide any more details if required.

I agree the kitchen is really compromised. I might be thinking about swapping the front door position. And OnePlan is right that given a detailed brief a design professional could give you options not considered before and help you visualize them too

Your project plan is very similar to the project we did in Esher few years ago, please have a look at Esher project.

I would suggest incorporating sliding doors to utility room, it’s more functional and cleaner look and creates more space for utility room.

The island will be great feature in your kitchen.

The size of the island in Esher project is 1.600mm x 2.400mm, sittings for 4 people, consist of 3 units 800mmm x 600mm.

In Ailsa Road Twickenham project the size of the island is 1.400 mm x 2.400 mmm for 6 people.

I would recommend the lighting above the island (as in Alisa Road project), bright and dimmable LED lights, as your space will require lots of clever lighting,

At this stage I would suggest getting free 3D AutoCAD design of your desired kitchen which can be adjusted with your requirements , it will help you both on visualisation of your future family space.
