Kitchen Design Ideas

Hi everyone, looking for some help with our new kitchen in our new extension. We are really feeling pressured to get this right and not make any regretful decisions. The only things we are set on are using our range cooker and we want a big breakfasting island with no sink in it. Any pointers or ideas would be much appreciated. thanks

have you thought about making full height cabinets that also hide/incorporate the utility door that go all the way to the end of the utility wall and then only have low cabinets in a similar style to what you have currently. You could install the range in the island if you plan it properly and get a flush hood integrated into the ceiling or one that pulls the air downwards.

I think it might be a bit dark in the kitchen . Only one small window ? Where it says entrance - is that to the garden or the main route into the house ( for visitors etc) I think a bit more info is required please !!

Hi Michelle, We've worked on various projects with banquette seating - where the island incorporates a bench seat to which a dining table is added. I don't think the island is big enough for a hob and sink. I'd personally lay it out exactly as karen said. Have your dishwasher one side of the sink and integrated bins the other. What type of oven/s (and hob) do you want, do you use a microwave? It's fine not to have seating at the island. However my brother fitted a large island in his "new" kitchen and having never had one before just included 2 stools tucked under at one end which is his one regret as people always congregate there and it's a bit of a fight to get a stool (well when we're there!) so it may be worth considering further if you entertain. Are you having some form of storage next to the seating and dining area? The sofa looks a little close to the kitchen? I'd zone the dining area with lighting and the sofa area with a rug. As you're extending you could also consider plug sockets in the floor for table/floor lamps for the seating area. i think you need to make a list of everything you want in the kitchen in terms of large and small appliances and exactly what storage requirements you have (also think about the size of things) as each person differs hugely. It is useful using someone like Karen as you'll get a kitchen designed specifically for you, which is also safe, which not all kitchen companies do

It does all seem a bit spaced out like this. My opinion would be to keep the hob on the island where it is so when you are cooking you are looking out on to what I presume is the garden/outdoor space and you can also see in to the TV/snug area. I would keep the ovens where they are but also position the sink along this wall if possible ( I presume you will be taking the floor up to run the water waste underneath?). I would not try and squeeze the sink/drainer in to the space in the middle of the tall units as this will not give you room to put anything down when taking it out of the oven. I would potentially only have 3 tall units on this wall and maybe keep them all on one side so the space does not look too overcrowded? So you could have a tall housing for a larder, the other for a fridge/freezer and the other for the ovens? For the units on the opposite wall under the window I would keep these all as base height units (no tall units) to help to open the space up more especially as this will be a high traffic zone with people walking through to the dining table and through the doors to the outside space.

Its a great space. I quite like the floor but there is a lot of it and its a bit flat looking, you could add a sisal rug under the table to break it up. I would also sell the black fridge and replace with something smaller, lighter and more discreet and a pale coloured bin too. Not a fan of the brick and think painting or plastering over it would create a sense of space and light. Maybe add some rustic mirrors to bounce the light around? The table is quite dark and heavy so again you could look at other options, though it does sit nicely with your other furnishings. And as others say, painting the units and beams will also make a big difference.

The entrance is the main route to the house and facing onto the road access to the property. The actual traditional front door is to the other end of the house that has no road access. With regards to day light the roof ridge detail is glazed to help with lighting as the extension will be north facing. I can try and provide any more details if required.

I agree the kitchen is really compromised. I might be thinking about swapping the front door position. And OnePlan is right that given a detailed brief a design professional could give you options not considered before and help you visualize them too

Your project plan is very similar to the project we did in Esher few years ago, please have a look at Esher project.

I would suggest incorporating sliding doors to utility room, it’s more functional and cleaner look and creates more space for utility room.

The island will be great feature in your kitchen.

The size of the island in Esher project is 1.600mm x 2.400mm, sittings for 4 people, consist of 3 units 800mmm x 600mm.

In Ailsa Road Twickenham project the size of the island is 1.400 mm x 2.400 mmm for 6 people.

I would recommend the lighting above the island (as in Alisa Road project), bright and dimmable LED lights, as your space will require lots of clever lighting,

At this stage I would suggest getting free 3D AutoCAD design of your desired kitchen which can be adjusted with your requirements , it will help you both on visualisation of your future family space.
