Many thanks everyone. We are still working through this decision (amongst many others that come along with the work we are doing at home). We've seen some brick looking materials (can't remember the names) but they seem easier to clean. Also we've not discarded the option of using glass or not using 'bricks' at all, and your input has helped!

You could also try penny tiles in Carrara marble. The border is herringbone marble. Fired Earth and Mandarin Stone both do really good marble styles and trims.
