Fireplace challenge
Comments (24)If you want to try working with the fireplace still in situ, I'd definitely remove the chunky hearth bit with its ugly ramparts and replace with a slab of granite or similar. If you also remove the flared top bit, you could then try framing it all with a wooden surround, as in Dolly's first pic, or like Minnie's pic, just replace with a simple mantel. I actually like the yellow wall paint but the band of white above the picture rail is very jarring and makes the fireplace look even squatter. We decided we couldn't live with the hideous brick fireplace in our new home and so we removed it, re-plastered the wall and made way for a big sofa instead. However, there isn't a chimney breast in our room as the chimney is external, so we were able to turn the room around. Comments (7)Hi, I took the small Izzy corner sofa from Sofa.com (274 x 95,5 cm each way, to give you an idea of how much space that size would take up) and placed it in front of the window and along the right wall. TV on the wall behind the door. I'd probably go for a round dining table (this one is 120 cm, Belgrave by Made.com) Go for a sofa that has simple lines and is on feet, so you can see the floor continuing under it for a spacious look. You could also opt for a dining bench and a fairly narrow rectangular dining table. If you tape out furniture measurements on the floor, it will give you a fair idea of how much space it will take up. Do this before you commit to buying something. Move in any time, as long as you don't mind selling a few bits of furniture while you're there :D You'll be pleased to hear we have started tackling the workshop and, two days of solid reorganisation later, I am exhausted but it's looking better. I'm sure with your skills it would have been done rather more efficiently/quickly but the rain hasn't helped - every time we moved things outside to give ourselves some space, it would start again and we'd be dragging it all back in!
